Asafa Calls Out JPS for "Bullsh*t" 78K Light Bill - Watch Video

Asafa Calls Out JPS for

Asafa Powell took to social media on New Year's Eve to speak out against JPS (Jamaica Public Service) who is the sole provider of the country's electricity for the exorbitant amount that he was charged for his light bill.

The athlete called on the GOJ (Government of Jamaica) to do something about the electricity company cheating people, like himself, who have barely used the service but still receive a high bill at the end of the month.

Powell started off his speech, which was especially addressed to the Prime Minister, by stating, "This is not a Happy New Year post, this is me pleading to the government to get a hold of JPS." He elaborated that he has not been in the country (he and his wife went to Ghana for a wedding) for a month and no one has been at his house to be using the power.

Asafa Powell

"I have the solar system, the battery system, and I also have the grid-tie system that sells back light to JPS," he stated. Also, he mentioned that he paid 79 thousand on his light bill before he left the country, however, for the month that he was away, he was billed another 78 thousand.

The former track star reiterated that the government needs to get ahold of JPS because "this is bullsh*t...and all them agguh do is send people come a mi yard come check to see if sumn wrong and then dem leave, nothing don't wrong a mi yard. And then mi affi go pay the bill."

Jamaica: Top 6 Biggest Stories of 2023

Jamaica: Top 6 Biggest Stories of 2023

2023 for Jamaica was a year filled with a lot of bad news and some good news, in this article, we take a look back on some of the most talked about stories that dominated the local news headlines.

Some of these stories include the SSL fraud case, the Chris Brown concert that was held at the National Stadium in Kingston, Gully Bop's illness and death and the most recent, a brawl during the much-anticipated clash at Sting 2023.

This top six list was curated by yardhype.com

The following list will contain six of 2023’s biggest stories in ascending order, starting with the story that took place first since the beginning of the year.

SSL Fraud Case

Jean-Ann Panton

At the beginning of the year, Jamaica faced one of its biggest financial scandals involving Stocks and Securities Limited (SSL) where it was found that a multimillion-dollar (over 30M USD) fraud was taking place behind its doors.

Major players at the institution were said to be embroiled in the scheme but only Jean-Ann Panton, former SSL wealth advisor, has been arrested and charged for the long-running (over a decade long) theft.

A list of victims who were defrauded by the scheme includes renowned Olympic Champion Usain St. Leo Bolt, who was reported to have lost millions of dollars (USD) to the fraud. The assistance of the FBI, FID, and the Fraud Squad were enlisted to unravel the case , the investigation is still ongoing.

The Chris Brown Concert

Number two on the list of top stories is the Chris Brown concert that took Jamaica by storm and had people scrambling for tickets. The event was held at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica, and the ticket prices ranged from $6,750 (bleachers) to $1.5 million (Sky View Suite).

A few of the artistes that took the stage along with Chris Brown were Ding Dong, TeeJay, Sean Kingston, Byron Messia, Najeeriii and Aidonia.

Phillip Paulwell's Baby Mother and Daughter Killing

This shocking murder case started out as a kidnapping in September 2023, but was confirmed to be a murder investigation around mid-October.

The perpetrator, reported to be naval officer Leoda Bradshaw, allegedly planned the kidnapping and murder of Phillip Paulwell's babymother, Toshyna Patterson, and his 10-month-old daughter, Sarayah Paulwell.

Bradshaw was arrested and charged for the killings along with the three men reportedly hired to carry out the murders.

The nation was shaken when news of the victims' burnt and discarded bodies being found hit the newsstands. According to reports, Bradshaw and an accomplice said to be her cousin, are expected to stand before the court on March 6, 2024. The other two accused have already been charged and sentenced to prison.

Jamaica 5.6 Magnitude Earthquake

One shock wave after another shook the island when Jamaica experienced the effects of a 5.6 magnitude earthquake that took place on October 30, 2023, that scared many and left others on edge for the next shake.

Videos of the quake showed people running for cover, reported asthma attacks, and goods being shaken from the shelves of multiple business places. Reports stated that the subsequent tremors were aftershocks resulting from the major quake which originated in Portland, 10km South of Buff Bay.

Gully Bop's Death

Gully BopGully Bop

In the number five position is the passing of Dancehall artiste Gully Bop, born Robert Lee Malcolm, on October 31, 2023.

The deejay died after a long-running stay in the hospital at KPH (Kingston Public Hospital). Gully Bop made multiple pleas to the public for help months before his death.

His grave digging was held on Saturday, December 30. The Wuk Offa Mi singer will be buried at his family's plot in Lawrence Tavern after a funeral service scheduled for January 14, 2024.

Sting Brawl

Last but not least was the fight that broke out between Dancehall artistes Fully Bad and Honormasity during their performance onstage at Sting.

Video footage shows the two going at it and tumbling from the stage into a crowd that scattered as they fell. Both artistes were charged by police after the incident with the expectation of a court appearance on January 24, 2024.

Honourable Mention: Klansman Gang Trial

Although not as talked about as the stories on the list, our honourable mention is the Klansman Gang Trial which saw the One Don Gang leader Andre Bryan along with 15 others convicted earlier this year. Blackman was later sentenced to 39 and a half years in prison.

Reports state that over 800 lives have been lost in relation to gang violence, however, Deputy Commissioner Fitz Bailey remains steadfast in upholding the anti-gang strategy to subdue gang activity in Jamaica.

WATCH: Man Crashes Into Bus While Performing Stunts in Portland

Video footage of a man crashing into the front of a white minibus is circulating online after he was videoed doing stunts on a main road only to lose control of his bike.

According to the short video taken, the man and his companion (the individual taking the video) were both on their respective bikes on the road. The unidentified man was riding his bike with one leg on the seat and the other hanging off while doing multiple swerving motions.

Just before the tragic moment, the man made a motion for his friend to slow down assumingly because he saw oncoming vehicles. However, the man continued to do stunts and accidentally swerved in front of the bus causing a collision.

Utterly shocked, his friend shouts, "Bom**cl**t. No, fada God, no." He maneuvered his bike onto the side of the road and runs back to where the accident happened. Right before the video cuts out, we see the damage done to the front of the bus and the man lying on the ground.

Queenie Tells A'mari The Nastiest Things One Can Think of During Online Rant, "Cum Lick out..." - Watch Video

Queenie Tells A'mari The Nastiest Things One Can Think of During Online Rant,

It seems as if Queen Ladi Gangsta and A'mari's amity has come to an end, resulting in a new online spat between the two social media personalities. The new issue between the two stemmed from Queenie's appearance on Sting's 2023, which has been a popular topic of discussion online for being what many label as a "flop."

In light of this, A'mari has been criticising Queenie for being booed and clapped off the stage regardless of them making peace on a live stream only two weeks ago. In response to A'mari's criticisms, Queenie contends that the Neko artiste is "badmind" because she did not get to perform at the event despite begging Sting founder Isaih Laing to be a part of the show.

In New online videos, the aspiring deejays take jabs at each other. In one video, A'mari asserted that she was responsible for putting Queenie in the spotlight at last year's staging and paving the way for her. In another video, Queenie blurted expletives at A'mari, saying, "Yuh hate mi tru yuh nuh go pan sting go flop. At least me enter di stage."

A'mari also stated "long run, short ketch," and warned Queenie to trod carefully or else she might just snatch her distraught husband.

In reply, Queenie also mentioned A'mari's 2022 Sting performance when the two battled, saying, "Yuh already flop yuhself from 2022."

Watch the video of Queenie and Amari arguing below:

A'mari went on to fire more shots at Queenie on TikTok, where she posted a video declaring that she did not need to go on Sting to be recognised as the Queen of Dancehall because she's winning from home.

Watch the TikTok video of A'mari below:

Also, DJ Mona Lisa made multiple posts on Threads targeting Queenie, in which she went on a rant about Queenie being jealous of her and Queenie not being a real artiste.

A'mari apparently wanted all the heat because she also warned anyone else from targeting Queenie, whom she called a "feisty itch."

Jamaican Prisoners Protest Over Deplorable Conditions, "We affi a bridge light" - Watch Videos

Jamaican Prisoners Protest Over Deplorable Conditions,

Videos of discontented Jamaican prisoners are circulating on social media, and in the videos, they express their dissatisfaction with prison life and its harsh conditions.

According to one of the inmates, the prison facilities that they are exposed to are in deplorable condition and if not for the fact that they bridge light (a term used to state that someone sources light illegally) they would be in darkness.

One of the videos shows a group of men sitting at a makeshift domino table and the speaker behind the camera states, "A this a wi rehabilitation, domino...that's all we play." He seems to be videoing the scene using a cell phone and he goes on to show the wires that were run to bridge the light.

The inmate called out the government for counteracting Ninjaman's earlier statement about the issues in the local lockups. The government replied to Ninjaman's statements, stating that, "things are already being undertaken," however the disgruntled inmate is pointing out that nothing is being done to change their situation.

Back in November of 2023, Ninjaman outlined that, “It is imperative that the powers that be see them (prisoners) for who they were before they became the people who got involved with crimes or the situations that place them in this system. The men and women who are incarcerated should be given some hope that when they return to society they will have the options, or more than likely, a great number of them will return to the very thing that got them locked up in the first place maybe worst.”

The other video showcases the prisoners protesting for reform inside the prison and holding signs that call for better rehabilitation measures, a seize and desist of inhumane treatment, a raise in pay for wardens/correctional officers, and so on.

One sign held up by a protester went as far as to describe the prison as a "recruitement centre for crime."

The video was posted to Instagram where people had varying remarks about the state of the prison and how it affected the prisoners.

Kimwrld said, "Jamaica prisons are so inhumane it's not even funny. That's why this country cannot get any better cause no rehabilitation programs are set in place for these ppl so they come out worse than how they went in."

On the other hand, badgirl_pooh stated, "Good affi suffer fi di bad some a unu nuh deserve fi si light bcuz unu put families in the dark too when unu do di crime them."

Foota Hype Claps Back At Fully Bad, Says He Spent Millions On Fully Bad And Let Him Know Mavado - Watch Video

Dancehall selector Foota Hype finally addresses the many claims made by Fully Bad against him, in his response, the former manager of the dancehall artiste refers to Fully Bad as one of the biggest fabricators he has ever known and says he did not make back a dollar off his career despite spending millions on Fully Bad's musical endeavours.

One of the claims made by the artiste revealed that he had one pair of shoes and limited outfits while he was under Foota's management. However, Foota Hype disclosed a different story from the one Fully Bad detailed in an interview.

The selector said Fully Bad was not only trying to make him look bad but also his own mother as she always sends clothes for him.

"How yuh know Tasha May, how yuh know Keiva, how yuh know Jesus dung a Spencer's Tailoring and the store them inna Jesus place nuh me carry yuh go buy clothes youth?" Foota Hype declared in his Instagram Live.

Foota Hype also rubbished Fully Bad assertion that he's the nephew of dancehall superstar Mavado and that Foota is the reason they no longer speak. According to Foota, he is the person who introduced the artiste to Mavado, despite the Gullyside singer not keen on the linkage.

"Uno ever see Mavado mention Fully Bad ever inna life? But yuh ago tell people seh a me mek you and singer nuh deal, me mek you and singer and nuh deal?.. Singer nuh like yuh from morning ano me cause nuttin' a me mek you and singer talk pon phone, so how yuh fi seh that, that's another lie," Foota outlined.

In closing Foota told his side of the story of the conflict between the two of their brothers, which Fully Bad said led to Foota driving away and leaving him stranded in Mobay. Foota stated that he was lying as he was the person who paid for his hotel room, food and gas costs via Wester Union remittance.

The widely known public figure, who built her reputation on her delicious cakes and philanthropy, took to social media with photographs of her latest charitable act, which featured 80 bags of goodies. Along with the care packages, Aunty Donna also donated $5000 towards aiding the residents with purchasing seasons. To sum up the cost of her large donation, Aunty Donna spent almost $500,000.

Accompanying the photos was a note that emphasised that despite some individuals criticising the cake for its high price, the success of her cake sale allowed her to provide food items and necessities to those in need.

Tanya Stephens Speaks Out Against Consistent "Deplorable Behavior" by Laing and Sting's Organizers

Tanya Stephens Speaks Out Against Consistent

After years of not appearing on Sting, veteran female artiste Tanya Stephens graced the annual event's stage on December 26, 2023, only to be left with disappointment.

Stephens spoke out about how she felt about Sting and its promoters on social media, stating, "I would be disappointed in Isaiah Laing if this was the first time..."

The It's A Pity singer also claimed that she and other artistes were told by Laing that he would be following up with them after the show (presumably for money matters) but according to Stephens, "We're still waiting for him to contact us "tomorrow" (Dec 27th, 2023)."

She mentioned that Laing's behaviour was deplorable and cited his actions as a reason why she had previously avoided performing at the event.

Stephens also pointed out that if not for the "younger generation" providing a "fall guy" for the failure of Sting 2023, the promoters would have had to deal with the backlash and fallout of a flopped event of their own making.

In closing, Stephens said, "Big up yourself...especially Mr Isaiah Laing. Where others have deteriorated you have actually remained consistent. As good as you have EVER been!"

Fully Bad Says He Regrets Sting Brawl, Acusses Foota Hype of Turning Kyodi Against Him - Watch Interview

Dancehall artiste Fully Bad has expressed regret for fighting at Sting and has accused Foota Hype of turning Kyodi against him.

After taking part in the fight that brought Sting to a close Wednesday morning, Fully Bad and Honormasity were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. Speaking out after his arrest, Fully Bad clarified that his altercation with Honormasity was not planned, as he was only paid to clash with Kyodi.

Fully Bad disclosed to the Jamaica Star that before the clash, he had told Isaiah Laing that Honormasity was not in the same class as him and Kyodi and that he would not clash him.

“Mi work suh hard, yuh know Eight years now mi a get fight, and it's actually my time now, yuh know. Mi nuh wah Laing a send up nuh artiste pan mi weh nuh inna di class, yuh seet,” Fully Bad stated.

Fully Bad also explained that he did not start the fight between him and Honormasity. The Composure deejay said that after he touched Honormasity to stop him from interrupting his performance, the artiste was the first to get violent.

Fully Bad went on to express regret for taking part in the fight, explaining that he did not want his fans to see him like that. According to Fully Bad, he was already upset before his performance due to the police delaying his entrance by searching his entire team.

The deejay shared that after his performance at Sting 2022, he was happy to get added to this year's clash, though he initially wanted to clash with Demarco. Seemingly dubbing himself the winner of the prematurely ended face-off, the artiste also expressed that he left Sting victorious.

"A nuff him (Kyodi) nuff up ina mi war to enuh a suh come mi, and him end up guh clash a Sting. When yuh too nuff a dat reach yuh. Di wul a him big fahrid mash up a Sting,” Fully Bad stated.

Despite his lyrical feud with Kyodi, Fully Bad expressed no further ill will to the artiste, describing him as his son. However, the artiste accused Footah Hype of turning Kyodi against him despite the pair not having any issues.

It was earlier reported that Sarayah Paulwell and mother, 27-year-old Toshyna Patterson, went missing from their home on Gilmour Drive in St Andrew on September 9. Upon investigation, police revealed that the mother and daughter were brutally killed and their bodies burned.

During a press conference on Thursday, Jamaica's Deputy Commissioner of Police, Fitz Bailey, provided the latest update on the gripping case, announcing that a fifth person was arrested and in custody. The Deputy Commissioner did not reveal the name of the person arrested in the update but confirmed that it's a male, who was taken into custody on Wednesday and is set to go through the legal process.

At the police press conference, Bailey told reporters that he would not reveal all the details of the suspect's arrest at this time, but would do so at a later date.

According to Bailey, "We are going to ensure that every person who participated in that crime faces justice." He continued, stating, "We are committed to that as an organization, it is one of the most gruesome crimes that we have ever seen and we are going to ensure whoever is responsible, it doesn’t matter where they hide."

In connection with the shocking and gruesome crime, four people were arrested, including Leoda Bradshaw, a United States Navy petty officer who is the mother of one of Paulwell's children and the alleged mastermind behind the crime.

Kanye West Introduces Yeezy Pods “$200 Socks”

Controversial rapper Kanye West is seemingly preparing to take the fashion world by storm once again, unveiling his curiously designed Yeezy Pods on Thursday.

Kanye launched his highly successful Yeezy brand in 2009. After unveiling his first shoes for Adidas in 2015, the sportswear brand parted ways with Kanye in 2022 after a series of anti-Semitic statements.

Following his return to Instagram, the rapper issued an apology to the Jewish community, posting a short statement in Hebrew on Tuesday. After the issues mentioned above, he was less active on social media, but the rapper has been spotted often out in public with his wife, Bianca Censori.

The couple are known for their peculiar fashion style, and during their public outings, Kanye has been seen rocking some intriguing shoes, which he unveiled on Thursday as his Yeezy Pods. The sock-like footwear, which goes all the way up to the calf, is currently available in three sizes in black with a thin sole at the bottom.
