Bob Marley & The Wailers... Easy Skanking In Boston "78, in stores Feb 17 + Visual

check out Easy Skanking In Boston ’78, in stores Feb 17 | Bob Marley & The Wailers

Bob Marley’s 70th birthday year, there will be a variety of releases and events to commemorate the Legend, his work and iconic impact. Over the course of the year, his legacy will be remembered by new releases of rare and unreleased material as well as fan favorite deluxe editions of his most memorable work. The first release will be available on February 17. Bob Marley & The Wailers: Easy Skanking In Boston ’78, features two historic live shows from Boston’s Music Hall, June 8, 1978.

This new and unreleased performance is from the Marley family giving unprecedented access for the first time to their personal material from their private collections and their vaults. The album will be available on blu-ray/cd combo pack as well as dvd/cd and standalone cd versions. Additional newly created animated material will also be a part of this release, marking the first time the family has incorporated this technology into any official Marley releases.

The video footage was shot with a hand-held camera by a fan that Marley allowed to sit right in front of the stage. The result is remarkable imagery that captures Marley from just a few feet away, allowing one to experience the intimacy of his set. While the cinematographer was shooting with film and forced to change rolls of tape, the gaps in the live footage have been augmented with specially created animation over the existing audio. The animation video elements were produced and created by the animation team of S77 whose credits include recent projects for Bruno Mars, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Disney, ESPN and many others. The 46-minute video includes seven of the 13 songs in the full set.

Highlights of the performance include a lively “Jammin’” and “The Heathen,” a song Marley and the band didn’t perform during the second set. The show features them at their most comfortable, truly enjoying themselves in the spotlight, basking in the appreciation of the audience.

Marley, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, is notable not only as the man who put reggae on the global map, but, as a statesman in his native Jamaica, he famously brought together the country’s warring factions — symbolized by rival politicians Michael Manley and Edward Siega joining hands on-stage — during his legendary “One Love Peace Concert” in Kingston, which took place on April 22, 1978, less than six weeks before this Music Hall performance in Boston. It was two years since Marley and the band arrived from Jamaica, with the 1977 release of Exodus recorded in London just after an assassination attempt on his life, turned into not just a socio-political statement, but one which included such hits as the title track, “Waiting In Vain” and “One Love,” paving the way for their next release Kaya and a world tour in ’78. Together with his music’s theme of liberation, Marley’s own rags-to-riches story brought inspiration to subjugated people around the world, where he was revered as a larger-than-life leader.

Thirty years after its original release, Bob Marley & The Wailers’ Legend shared the top of the charts, holding the No. 5 spot on Billboard’s 200 Album Chart among Maroon 5 (#1), Jeezy (#2), Guardians of the Galaxy Soundtrack (#3), and Ariana Grande (#4). Legend also holds the distinction of being the longest-charting album in the history of Billboard magazine’s Catalog Albums chart and remains the world’s best-selling reggae album. Marley’s accolades include inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1994) and ASCAP Songwriters Hall of Fame (2010), a GRAMMY® Lifetime Achievement Award (2001), multiple entries in the GRAMMY® Hall Of Fame, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (2001).

Whitney Houston daughter overdosed on drugs

The daughter of late singer and entertainer Whitney Houston was found unresponsive in a bathtub Saturday and taken to a hospital in the north Atlanta suburbs, police said.

Bobbi Kristina Brown was found by her husband, Nick Gordon, and a friend and given CPR, said Officer Lisa Holland, a spokeswoman for the Roswell Police Department. When police arrived, they gave Brown additional care until she was taken alive to North Fulton Hospital.

The incident remains under investigation, police said.
Whitney Houston’s Daughter, Bobbi Kristina, Found ‘Unresponsive’ in Bathtub yardhype

The situation is especially chilling given Whitney Houston was found dead of a drug overdose in a bathtub at Los Angeles’ Beverly Hilton Hotel. She died Feb. 11, 2012 during Grammy weekend.

Brown is the daughter of Houston and R&B singer Bobby Brown. A representative for the family did not immediately return messages seeking comment.

Whitney Houston was found dead in a hotel bathtub on Feb. 11, 2012, in Beverly Hills, California. The 48-year-old Houston had struggled for years with cocaine, marijuana and pills, and her behaviour had become erratic.

Authorities examining Houston’s death found a dozen prescription drug bottles in the hotel suite. They concluded that Houston accidentally drowned. Heart disease and cocaine use were listed as contributing factors in Houston’s death.

Over her career, Houston sold more than 50 million records in the United States alone. Her voice, an ideal blend of power, grace and beauty, made classics out of songs like “Saving All My Love For You,” ”I Will Always Love You,” ”The Greatest Love of All” and “I’m Every Woman.” Her six Grammys were only a fraction of her many awards.

Houston had her first No. 1 hit by the time she was 22, followed by a flurry of number one songs and multiplatinum records.

Kranium"s new Deal With Atlantic Records

New York based dancehall star Kranium has signed a multiple album deal with Atlantic Records.

The new deal could see the reggae/dancehall star taking his career to the next level.

Kranium rose to fame in 2013 with his debut single “Nobody Has To Know” becoming a huge hit globally. The single sold 29,000 copies and peaked at No. 32 on the Reggae Digital Songs chart, according to Billboard.

The single also reached the Next Big Sound and Twitter Emerging Artists charts and the official music video has since rocked up 6.5 million views on YouTube.

The track “Nobody Has to Know” was produced by New York-based Jamaican producer Lamar “LMR” Reynolds. The song has also garnered a lot of attention in Jamaica, particularly in Montego Bay where Kranium grew up.

On December 22, 2014, Kranium signed a global record deal with Atlantic Records that will exclude the Caribbean.

“My signing is a good look for dancehall, which should be bigger than it is,” Kranium told Billboard. “I am motivated to take dancehall to another level and extremely happy to be a part of the Atlantic family because of the support they’ve given to reggae.”

“I am always thrilled when I can identify another artist that will be a great addition to our roster,” Atlantic president/CEO Craig Kallman added. “Kranium is a very talented writer, is stylistically fresh, has a unique vocal tone and I am really excited to be back in the reggae business, working with a brand new, young artist.”

Kranium

Atlantic Records is not new to dancehall. The label has in the past signed hugely successful dancehall artists such as Sean Paul, Elephant Man, and Wayne Wonder.

Kranium is being managed by system selector Patrick “Pee Wee” Bonsu, who is based in Queens, and Pierre Bost who is based in London. Bost is also part of the management by fast rising reggae star Chronixx.

Kranium and Atlantic Records are already planning to release a remix for “Nobody Has to Know” due by the summer of 2015.

More on the Event..

OPENING night of the Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival was dubbed Tribute to John Holt, but patrons were hard-pressed to hear the music of the legendary artiste who died in October last year. With an all-Jamaican line-up, except for Trini Oscar B, the rendition of Holt’s popular tracks were few and far between at the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium on Thursday.

That aside, the performers, for the most part, delivered tight sets with George Nooks, Josey Wales and Judy Mowatt managing to get the small audience on their feet to dance to their popular songs, despite the night’s chilly winds.

The Holt Tribute got off to a flying start thanks to veteran Errol Dunkley.

Dressed in full white, he dropped Don’t Know Why, You’re Gonna Need Me, I Wanna Know, Black Cinderella, before launching into his monster hit for 1979 OK Fred, which was written by Holt.

His performance segued into that of Cornell Campbell, whose laid-back style of performance was in stark contrast to that of Dunkley, and caused the vibe inside the stadium to dip. Despite this, he delivered some of his memorable tracks. He performed Bouncing and Queen of the Minstrels — his Studio One hit — among others in his set.

The vibe would return once George Nooks stepped onto the stage. He brought back life to the venue with Left With a Broken Heart, Always on My Mind, So Much Love to Give, Zion Gates and Tribal War.

The night’s sole female act Judy Mowatt again proved why she has endured decades in the music industry, whether gospel or secular.

Her voice was crisp and clear from the moment she took to the stage till the end of her 40-minute set. In between, the audience was treated to rendition of Thank You Lord, Want to be More, Unconditional Love, We’ll Sing our own Song, her powerful empowerment anthem Black Woman and Many Are Called.

In tribute to her ‘Brother’ John Holt, she sang Tide is High. She was well received.

The Holt factor was raised when the late singer’s son, Brian, took to the stage and performed his father’s Wear You to the Ball. He was later presented with a plaque by the festival’s organisers expressing appreciation for the life and work of John Holt.

The vocal trio, The Tamlins gave another signature performance with their tight harmonies carrying on the night air. Among the Holt tracks they performed was Happy Go Lucky Girl, before dropping their show-stopper Baltimore.

But the sole encore of the night was left for legendary toaster Josey Wales. The Colonel was in his usual form and entertained his audience to the max. Undercover Lover, Bobo Dreadlocks, Leggo Me Hand Gateman had the audience going, and at the end of his set they would not let him go.

Last-minute addition to the line-up Johnny Clarke delivered his second great set on local soil in as many weeks. The hitmaker from the 1970s just kept reeling out the tracks — Rock With Me, Move Up, None Shall Escape the Judgement. His set was a bit too long and with patrons being battled weary on night one, they began filing out.

This left a sprinkling of patrons to enjoy the soca set by Oscar B. The former frontman for Byron Lee and the Dragonnaires did not bear this in mind, as he delivered with his Vybez Band.

The festival culminates tonight with The Pointer Sisters, Charlie Wilson, Peter Cetera and sibling band Morgan Heritage.

Jah Cure inks new Album

Unconditional Love was a big hit for Jah Cure three years ago and now he wants to top that success through his upcoming album ‘The Cure’ that is part of his recently signed deal with VP Records.

Just a few days ago, Jah Cure signed a two-album deal with VP that he hopes will be a fruitful one.

“I feel good because me and VP coming back way further than the average person would imagine,” he told THE WEEKEND STAR.

He explained that he was supposed to release his Ghetto Life album with VP many years ago, and that should have been his first album if someone did not release a compilation album before that time. He said he has always kept in contact with VP “even when I was down and out”. Now that they have signed a new agreement, Jah Cure said, “I think it was destiny. VP ago build me and me ago build dem. We just a team up and mek some things fulfill. It means a lot because I need to lift my brand and step up the ladder some more. I need a company behind me so the world can take us seriously.”

Interestingly, Jah Cure said this will be his seventh album, but officially the third one, as four of the other albums were compilations done by other persons. He, however, insists that he does not want his work to lose value by releasing too many projects.

“I don’t want to put out 20 albums and don’t have any plaques on my wall to show my kids,” he told THE WEEKEND STAR during an interview at Big Yard Studio in St Andrew yesterday.

compromise

Jah Cure was also very pleased with persons like Llamar ‘Riff Raff’ Brown, Clive Hunt and Handel Tucker, who played a major part in the album. “These are the persons I chose to work with. I am trying to get the best that I know of and I am not trying to compromise on the product,” he said, adding that the album will be released in March.

And Jah Cure doesn’t plan to compromise on his very soulful style either. “A lot of persons are doing roots reggae, I am not going to jump in that same bucket,” he said, adding that he will release another song from the album before its launch. “I have some nice songs on that album.”

Upon release of the album, he said he will be travelling to places like Russia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Israel, New Caledonia, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and parts of Africa where the album will be promoted heavily, “until I step into the US and Canada that is the biggest market,” he said.

Jah Cure said social media will also play a major role in the promotion of the album. And between the promotion of the album, Jah Cure said he will also be working on launching his Sicature Clothing line that will make leather belt and shoes.

Since mid-January, fighting between the Ukrainian military and Russian-backed rebels in Eastern Ukraine has escalated. Dozens of civilians have died due to the heavy shelling.

The rebels of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR) have been attacking Ukrainian Army positions in an effort to reach the city of Sloviansk. In this dispatch, VICE News travels to the Ukrainian Army’s front lines in the village of Kodema to see how soldiers there, clad in German and British gear that has been donated to them, are preparing for the much talked-about DNR offensive.

We also visit the Ukrainian-controlled mining town of Dzerzhynsk to see firsthand what effects the fighting between the two sides has had on the local population.

The Skints to drop third album: "FM"

“Fresh Brit reggae” David Rodigan MBE, BBC Radio 1Xtra

Following the announcement of their signing with celebrated label Easy Star Records, reggae-dub four-piece The Skints are excited to reveal the title and cover art to their highly anticipated third album, ‘FM’, due for release on 9th March.

The Skints to drop third album FM cover art yardhype

Set on the hottest day in the city on record at imaginary London pirate radio station The Big FM / Frequency Murderation, 103.Skints, the album is inspired by a time when the young band used to drive around in guitarist Josh Waters Rudge’s car, tuning in to the radio and trying to find new music.

Pulling from various influences ingrained in the group while growing up listening to a number of different styles and sounds, ‘FM’ is The Skints’ fitting tribute to the radio culture they love as music fans. Progressing through the bubbling sound of grime and garage to summertime sound system reggae, roots, dancehall, traditional rocksteady, Motown soul and punk, the East London-based group takes listeners on a whistle-stop tour of the capital’s underground culture in their latest venture.

With Prince Fatty back in the producer’s chair adding his signature take on the genre, the album also features a host of exciting guests including reggae legends Tippa Irie and Horseman, grime MC Rival (all playing alter-ego roles as the station’s DJs), and even a surprise vocal cameo by comedian Rufus Hound.

Having finished 2014 in style, taking to the road on the Jägermeister Music Tour alongside Me First and The Gimme Gimmes and performing at London’s historic Brixton Academy in the process, 2015 promises to be another heavy year for the four-piece. With a headline tour of the UK, France, the Netherlands and Germany confirmed for April, including a date at O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire, plus the band’s debut USA venture booked for May, The Skints show no signs of slowing down upon the release of ‘FM’, for which further details are soon to be unveiled.

Pre-sale for this unique musical ode to London begins on Monday 2nd February and will be followed by the album’s official release on 9th March. Both the digital pre-order (via iTunes) and the physical version (via TheSkints.co.uk) will give away two instant grat tracks with each order.
