Christian City Under Siege: The Battle for Iraq (Dispatch 5) [VLOG]
Earlier this week, ISIS began an assault on the historically Assyrian Christian city of Qaraqosh in the northern Nineveh province, just east of Mosul. Kurdish peshmerga forces moved into the city to fortify it against a barrage of mortar shells. The city, though not officially located in the Kurdistan Regional Government, has become one of the disputed areas, as the Iraqi government has abandoned it and ISIS is vying for control.
Dozens of mortar rounds landed on the outskirts of the city Wednesday night, causing tens of thousands of residents to flee towards Erbil. Assyrian Christians from Mosul had previously fled the ISIS takeover and were seeking sanctuary in Qaraqosh and in the nearby Christian city of Bartella.
Iraq’s Assyrian Christians are some of the earliest converts to Christianity and are indigenous to the Nineveh plains. Of recent, they have suffered massacres and persecution owing to the instability sowed by the American invasion in 2003. Qaraqosh has always seen as a safe haven, especially for those periodically fleeing violence in Mosul, such as in 2008.
While the attack continued, VICE News was caught in a miles long traffic jam as many residents fled in fear with nothing but the clothes on their back. Peshmerga forces, fearing car bombs and hidden insurgents, meticulously combed through the traffic, and set up tense checkpoints, causing further chaos. We also travelled to the abandoned city of Qaraqosh to speak with residents who have remained there despite the attacks. They tell us why they’ve decided to stay and protect their city.

Bolt Over Recent Injury, Available for Commonwealth Games
Track and field fans at next month’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, will be delighted with news that Jamaican sprinting star Usain Bolt has made himself available to compete at the July 23 – August 3 event.
Bolt, who has enjoyed a stranglehold on international sprinting since taking three gold medals in world record times at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, advised, through his website, that he has informed the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) of his availability.
The thing though is that the 27-year-old, if selected, will only compete in the 4x100m relay.
Injury earlier
Bolt has been working to regain fitness and form after his build-up was disturbed by injury earlier this year, forcing the double Olympic champion to withdraw from races in Ostrava and Paris as well as the ongoing JAAA/Supreme Ventures National Senior Championships, which this year is being used to help select Jamaica’s athletics team to the Commonwealth Games.
“I am not ready to compete at the Jamaican Championships this weekend, but I have informed the JAAA’s that I am available for selection for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and have submitted the relevant documentation,” Bolt said.
The National Senior Championships is considered mandatory for athletes hoping to represent Jamaica at senior international competition, but under the JAAA selection criteria, injured athletes are allowed to skip the championships and maintain consideration once a medical exemption is granted.
FANS REQUEST
Bolt, however underlined that he does not want to take the place of someone who earned it at this weekend’s trials, but that he hopes to at least feature in a relay after receiving overwhelming support and requests from his fans in the United Kingdom.
“I do not wish to take the place of anyone who qualifies this weekend in an individual event, but I am available for relay duty if the selectors feel I can be an asset to the Jamaican team in Glasgow,” Bolt added. “I have received lots of requests, invitations and messages of support from my fans in Scotland who are looking forward to a great event.”
Bolt has never competed at the Commonwealth Games but has repeatedly stated that he hoped to feature in Glasgow and add a Commonwealth Games medal to his six Olympic and 10 World Championships medals.

Kiprich And Danielle deny sex rumour
Dancehall artistes Danielle D.I and Kiprich have denied allegations made by a Twitter account called Kiprich Sting King, which claims that the artistes had sexual relations while filming the music video for their recent collaboration.![Kiprich FT Danielle D.I. In a series of controversial posts, the Twitter account claims that the two recording artistes have been dating and even implies that Kiprich was the person who led to Danielle D.I’s failed relationship with former Jamaica and Stoke City star footballer, Ricardo Fuller.
“A me slap har wey from Fuller. Who a di reaaal baller now,” one of the tweets from Kiprich Sting King read.
The WEEKEND STAR contacted Kiprich for clarification and he said persons have been targeting his social network pages since the start of the year.
“This is a fake Twitter account, my real account is Kiprich Nuh Behaviour. I wouldn’t guh mek another twitter account fi talk things bout people. A just some mischievous people, me and D.I just do a song and video called Hear The Pree, and we bring out the concept in the video. When a man a guh call people name dem thing deh nuh good, me wouldn’t do that. That’s not my style,” he continued.
Get a grip
“The last time dem target mi Facebook a try get money from people and now this. Some people just idle and need something to do. Get a grip, get a hold a yu life man. I am a private person, I am more the sneaky type,” Kiprich said.
Danielle D.I also criticised the creators of the Twitter page, claiming that they were trying to hamper the progress of Hear The Pree.
“Are you serious, sex on set of a video? What kind of groupie business dat dem a pull off pan mi? This pass devastating. I woke up in such a good mood, I don’t know why people come up with this right now. Imagine you are trying to move forward and people are trying to drag you backwards. I have a very private life and I have moved on with my life, so I am deeply hurt to hear comments like this. Just stop being malicious and stop hating … oh God,” she said.
Danielle D.I and Kiprich recently released a raunchy trailer for their video for Hear Di Pree that will be officially released in July. She also has a new single titled, Heads Up produced by Sly and Robbie. Kiprich is also promoting the single Loyalty Over Royalty and will soon be leaving for Canada alongside Outaroad Records label mate Berri.
The Kiprich Sting King account now has over 2,000 followers, while Kiprich’s original account Kipponubehavior has over 25,000 followers.

Dancehall Diva "Tifa" Partners with (SIG) to release headphones
In an effort to expand on her brand and celebrity status, dancehall artiste Tifa has ventured into merchandising with the release of her signature headphone line.
The project is a partnership with Sound is Genious (SIG) and is called the Tifa SIG line.
“I had always wanted to get into merchandising, but I didn’t want to do the usual clothing line or store, and then I was approached by known inventor Sigfrued Jalink and his wife who form part of the marketing team at my new label Island Kings Records. Jalink has invented things like the telephone watch, solar tents and pots for the military, specific exercise machines for NBA players etc. We decided to do a Tifa headphone line”. Tifa explained in a media release.
She also revealed the different gadgets associated with the headphone.
“There’s bluetooth headphone. We have the ear buds which are perfect for jogging and exercising and they don’t fall off you. There’s the dice collection which is the upgrade blowtorch headset that works with your phone and other electronics and this is blinged out. There’s the studio collection for all music heads that value quality sound. My signature colours for Bluetooth headsets are black, white and purple. There’s the smart box which is a bluetooth speaker and that comes in black. The quality is amazing in terms of sound and rivals if not better with our competitors. The battery life on these headphones lasts up to 72 hours,” she pointed out.
Digicel is on board as one of the distributors and partners of the Tifa SIG headphones. The headphones will be distributed in select Digicel stores and electronic stores.

South Africa"s Illegal Gold Mines [Video]
In the 1970s, South Africa was the world’s most prolific exporter of gold. Over the years, industrial decline has seen widespread closures of the mines across the country. However, Johannesburg sits on the biggest gold basin ever discovered. It’s perhaps not surprising that many of these abandoned mines have seen a recent boom in illegal mining activity.
Everyday, hundreds of illegal gold miners, known as Zama Zamas, descend kilometers deep beneath the surface. The miners often spend weeks underground, toiling away at the country’s untapped gold reserves. Observers have suggested that illegal mining is now so widespread, black-market gold arguably supports the communities once subsistent on the very same mines they worked in before they shut down.
The lack of policing in the mines has seen the practice go on largely unabated. However, in the absence of law enforcement, the extensive network of abandoned mines beneath the region has become an arena to deadly gang warfare between rival factions. VICE News visited illegal mines near Johannesburg, to meet the Zama Zamas risking life and limb everyday in the violent struggle for South Africa’s illegal gold.

Last month Chin debut “Everything Reminds Me Of You” on The Voice 2014 season finale.
Tessanne Chin convincingly won The Voice season 5 last year and secured a recording contract and a cash prize of $100,000. She has been busy recording her new album since.
Tessanne Chin is gearing up for a big performance at this year’s Reggae Sumfest.

Producers include Jerry ‘Wonda’ Duplessis, Stargate, Shama ‘Sak Pase’ Joseph, Mark ‘Exit’ Goodchild, Shaun Pizzonia aka Sting International; and Dwayne ‘Supa Dups’ Chin-Quee.
Among the songwriters who contributed to the project are Autumn Rowe, Claude Kelly, AC Burrell, Ryan Tedder (of rock band OneRepublic fame), Rock City aka Planet VI, and legendary songwriter Diane Warren.
The first single, Tumbling Down, which was released in the wake of her The Voice win, failed to ignite radio and the charts. The track was written by Tedder.
The second single, Everything Reminds Me of You, was written by songwriting duo of brothers known as Rock City aka Planet VI. The US Virgin Islands natives (Timothy and Theron Thomas) have written songs for the likes of Rihanna (Man Down and Pour it Up), Justin Bieber (Runaway Love), Iyaz (Replay), Sean Kingston (Take You There), Jennifer Hudson (If this Isn’t Love), Miley Cyrus (We Can’t Stop)and R Kelly (Crazy Night) among others.
Chin debuted Everything Reminds Me of You during the Season 6 semi-final round of The Voice with a live performance on Tuesday.
The single was produced by Supa Dups. It was recorded at Inner Circle’s Miami-based Circle House studios.
“It was an honour to work with Tessanne. She is such an amazing talent and humble soul. The experience was magical, and being able to share in it with a fellow Jamaican just made it that much sweeter,” Supa Dups told the Jamaica Observer.

Although polling went fairly smoothly in Kabul, voters elsewhere in the country were repeatedly targeted by the Taliban; as many as 50 Afghans were killed. Others had their fingers, still black with telltale ink after voting, cut off by Taliban fighters. VICE News visited the hospital in Herat to speak with several victims being treated there. Fearing further harm, some of them agreed to speak with us only if they covered their faces and hid their identity. Brazil’s public school teachers have played a major role in the protests surrounding the World Cup over the past year. They have demanded pay increases, better working conditions, and improvements to Brazil’s lagging social services. In addition to protesting, teachers across Rio de Janeiro have been going on periodic strikes. For the past month, teachers have been trying to meet with Rio’s governor in order to voice their demands directly to him. Their requests to speak to him have been ignored. In our third dispatch from the World Cup, VICE News goes to a demonstration in downtown Rio led by public school teachers demanding a 20 percent pay increase as they continue to try and make their voices heard.

The African nation raced into a three-goal in the first half and, though they were made to work in the second period, sealed a crucial victory
Algeria moved to within touching distance of reaching the last-16 of the World Cup for the first time after beating South Korea 4-2 in a six-goal thriller in Porto Alegre.
Vahid Halilhodzic’s men ran riot in the opening 45 minutes as the South Korea defence was found wanting time and again.
Islam Slimani opened the scoring midway through the opening period by lifting the ball over goalkeeper Jung Sung-ryong from a long-range pass, before Rafik Halliche doubled the advantage and Abdelmoumene Djabou made it three.
Son Heung-min stopped the rot by slotting the ball between the legs of Rais M’Bolhi to reduce the deficit just after the interval, but it proved to be brief respite for the 2002 World Cup co-hosts.
Yacine Brahimi appeared to put the result beyond doubt in the 62nd minute, but a Koo Ja-cheol strike 10 minutes later kept the match alive as a contest.
However, Korea were unable to set up a nervy end to the game as Algeria went two points clear of Russia in second place in Group H with one game left to play.
Algeria – a team who failed to score a single goal in South Africa in 2010 – become the first African nation to score four goals in a World Cup fixture.
While South Korea were unchanged from their 1-1 opening draw with Russia, Halilhodzic made five changes to the Algeria side that started the 2-1 defeat to Belgium.
