In Jamaica, attacks, murder, and rape are common occurrences against LGBTI people, with little to no retribution or justice brought against those responsible.
After being forced from shacks, derelict buildings, and their own families, many homeless LGBTI Jamaicans have found refuge in the storm drainage systems of Kingston — known locally as the gully. For trans girls and gay men unable or unwilling to hide their sexuality, the sense of community and relative safety the gully provides acts as a welcome sanctuary, and for many, a hope of change to come.
VICE News travelled to the New Kingston area to see what LGBTI life is like in Jamaica — where just being who you are can mean living a life underground.

In Colombia, the heirs to Pablo Escobar’s drug empire are conducting business as usual — though with a somewhat lower profile. Today’s Medellin drug cartels are highly structured and run much like multinational corporations. But violent gangs operating in the city’s slums provide the muscle; known as combos, they’ve carved Medellin into fiefdoms, imposing invisible borders between gang territory — borders that, when ignored, often get people killed.
VICE News travelled to Medellin to meet gang members — along with top cartel leaders and assassins — who revealed the inner workings of the city’s modern-day cocaine industry.

Track-Star "Veronica Campbell-Brown" remains optimistic
In 2002 a then 20 year-old Veronica Campbell finished second behind Bahamian superstar Debbie Ferguson, as she raced to a 10.91 seconds win in the women’s 100m final at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England.
Campbell-Brown took the silver medal in 11.00, losing to what was the fifth-fastest time by a woman that year and remains today, the fastest female time ever recorded at the Commonwealth Games.
Today, the Jamaican, a three-time Olympic gold medallist, will be looking to get one over on her long time friend and rival, when she lines up in the women’s 100m semi-finals at 7:10 p.m. (1:10 p.m. Jamaica time) inside Hampden Park, with the aim of not only making the final at 9:35 p.m. (3:35 p.m.), but also winning what would surprisingly be her first Commonwealth Games gold medal and breaking Ferguson’s 10.91 record.
“I think it is one of the best fields of female sprinters in a long time at the Commonwealth Games. I was actually in that race when Debbie-Ann Ferguson ran that 10.91, I came second in 11.00, so yes I was in that race. Debbie is a sweetheart and I know she won’t be upset if it (record) goes tomorrow,” Campbell-Brown said.

Campbell-Brown, who won her heat yesterday in 11.29, is one of three Jamaicans through to today’s semi-finals.
“It is always a delight to finish healthy and it was great to run in front of so many people. It was great to see so many people out,” Campbell-Brown added.
“It feels good, I love to compete and I love championships and it’s really great to be here and great to be representing Jamaica and I hope that all of us will do well to make all the Jamaicans around the world proud.”
Another Jamaican who will be looking to medal here is Schillonie Calvert.
Calvert, who celebrated a birthday yesterday, was also impressive, winning her heat in 11.29 seconds, and though she didn’t have any special plans for her birthday celebrations, the 26-year-old, Glen Mills-coached sprinter is looking forward to today’s races.
“I’m in good condition. I am okay where I am at coming into the championships. My coach is pleased, he’s the one doing all the work behind the scenes and know what I am capable of. Once he says I am in good condition then I am expecting to do well,” Calvert said.

On Sunday, the Israeli military carried out the single deadliest offensive in its nearly three-week assault on Gaza, killing as many as 100 Palestinians in the neighborhood of Shejaiya. The operation — which many have called a massacre — has forced most of the remaining residents of Shejaiya to flee their homes and seek refuge in hospitals or UN schools because there is nowhere else for them to escape in the blockaded Gaza Strip.
VICE News was in Gaza to see the aftermath of the bombing of Shejaiya. We visited the central morgue in Gaza City, which holds the bodies of many who were killed. We then went to see the immediate aftermath of the shelling of yet another house in the city, and later saw another shelling site where residents were still trying to uncover family members in the rubble.

Independent artist, Five Steez, has released first single, ‘Deadly’, from his forthcoming digital EP, ‘These Kingston Times’

paint my city the way I see it, and in
a way I’ve never heard the story told before in music,” says Five
Steez. “Since Hip Hop’s genesis with

Kool Herc, there has always been a Jamaican influence and
involvement in the genre, but you’ve never heard about actual life here in ‘yard’, as we
aff
ectionately call it. It’s a new perspective in Hip Hop, but parallel to that of urban environments
worldwide.”

Deadly
’ does not even scratch the surface,
however,
according to Five Steez. “The project gets
dark, deep and
grimy at times, but
I want to ease
people into it without giving away too much of
what it’s really about till
they
hear it.”

For all the armchair generals here, this team reacted a lot better than most I’ve seen. At least this wasn’t a standard “take contact, suppress, and retreat” situation. They took contact, identified the enemy location, pushed forward, and forced the Taliban out of their positions so quickly that they had to leave supplies and weapons behind.

Usain Bolt will finally take the track again in August
The fastest man of all time has not been seen all season long, but will get out of the blocks four times next month starting with the Commonwealth Games. Injury concerns had slowed Bolt’s return to the track this season.
But after missing all of the 2014 season so far, the 2013 triple World champion yesterday released his 2014 racing schedule and it includes running the sprint relay for Jamaica at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, and three other meets.
According to the schedule released on Twitter and his website yesterday, Bolt, who earlier this season pulled out of the Ostrava Golden Spike and the Meeting Areva in Paris, will technically open his season at the Games which begin on July 23. He is down to run the sprint relay on August 1 and 2.
Bolt then heads to Brazil where on August 17 he will compete in the Mano o Mano 100 metres at the Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro.
Six days later on August 23, Bolt runs another 100 metres at the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial in Warsaw, Poland. From there, he heads to Zurich where on August 28 he runs the 100 metres at the Weltkasse meet.
No meets have been announced after that date and it is not certain if the world record holder in both the 100 and 200 metres will race again for the remainder of the year.
Bolt had said in a statement released in early June that he chose to pull out of the earlier meets this season because of an injury he suffered in training that set him back in his background training. It was for that reason and major championships coming in what will be his last major competition cycle that saw him take the precaution of not competing until he was truly ready to compete.
“It is important for me to take my time this year as I have three tough years ahead in 2015, 2016 and 2017 as I attempt to defend my world and Olympic titles,” he said then.
“I definitely plan to compete this season and will continue to work hard with my coach who I have the utmost confidence in to get me fit and ready to compete.”

American R&B artiste Jason Derulo represented the genre well with a marathon performance at International Night 1 of Reggae Sumfest at the Catherine Hall Entertainment Centre Saturday morning.
