Popcaan’s debut album, Where We Come From, will be released on Mixpak on June 10th! Executive produced by Dre Skull the album features production from Dre Skull, Dubbel Dutch, Jamie Roberts, Anju Blaxx and Adde Instrumentals. Popcaan’s first full length offering sees his signature melodies and uplifting tones on thirteen original tracks. As musicologist Wayne Marshall writes in his essay on the album,
“Where We Come From gives voice, as the best reggae does, to the contradictions of life in a society rife with inequities and yet so rich. Whether odes to the ghetto or the good life, Popcaan’s lyrics bring realist portraits and utopian visions into dynamic tension. Songs about struggle and sex and happiness occupy the same space because they do. And whatever the topic, Popcaan’s infectious positivity comes through.”

While his former mentor Vybz Kartel has been locked up, Popcaan has kept the torch aloft, rising to the top of the dancehall field behind bars of a different sort: the verses and hooks that have made him a favorite from Jamaica to Japan.

Jahmiel To Perform Live on CVM At Sunrise this Wednesday May 21st

On the eve of his EP release showcase, reggae crooner Jahmiel will give fans and music lovers a sample by performing live on the Jamaican Morning Show ‘CVM at Sunrise. The show which broadcast live in Jamaica, can also be seen via their live stream www.cvmtv.com/live_stream.php

The singjay will perform live and talk with the show hosts of his upcoming showcase in which he will perform songs from his “Mission EP”, live and backed up by Warrior Love Band and various projects slated for his busy summer. Did Gage Record Tommy Lee"s Alledged Voice Note?

Yesterday The management team of recording artiste Gage has denied allegations by websites that his voice was used to mimic Tommy Lee Sparta’s, in the recently released audio of a male, said to be Tommy Lee Sparta, who cried during a conversation.

According to Gage’s manager, Neil, Tommy Lee Sparta’s management is trying to do damage control by dragging Gage into the fracas because he has a similar voice.

“The websites are trying to give Tommy Lee a buzz and Tommy Lee dem a try repair dem thing by making up stuff like dat. Gage don’t duh nothing like dat. as a matter of fact, Gage did not even know about the audio,” he said.

“Gage’s personal selector told us about Tommy Lee’s incident and Gage nuh have nuh time fi dat, its garbage. Tommy Lee is just looking a comeback, and what he needs to do is just mek some good song,” he said.

The manager also had advice for persons helping to spread the allegations. “Stop spread rumour, and find out real facts. Leave the deejay alone, a studio him deh a mek good music,” Neil said.

Gage recently released a new single, featuring a Vybz Kartel sample, New King. The deejay’s voice is sometimes compared to that of Tommy Lee Sparta. however, the two have not been very fond of each other and have released songs throwing jabs at each other in recent times.

Tommy Lee Sparta’s business partner and publicist, Keona Williams, recently told THE weekend STAR the artiste claimed to have had no knowledge as to the origin of the audio.

Tommy Lee Sparta is promoting new UIM Records-produced singles, Wine Up and Dream.

ZJ Wah Wa Jailed In The US

Popular danchall Disk Jock “ZJ Wah Wa” has been arrested in the United States. According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office website, ZJ Wah Wa is currently in custody at Broward County in Florida. The website states that 24-year-old Wah Wa, real name Deon-Ville Antonio Ohara, has been in police custody since May 5 this year. It is understood that he was arrested by the United States Marshals Service.

Despite numerous searches, the website did not state the reason for his arrest, nor did it give an expected release date.

ZJ Wah Wa Arrested

It, however, stated that he is in the main jail and in Marshal’s Hold. There was also a visitation schedule.

When THE weekend STAR contacted the Broward Sheriff’s Office via telephone last night, an officer said he was unable to say what ZJ Wah Wa was charged for, or when he would be released, because he is being held at the jail for the United States Marshals Service.

However, when contacted, the United States Marshals Service office was already closed.

The Unites States Marshals Service has been serving the United States since 1789. It is responsible for fugitive operations, witness security, prisoner transportation, prisoner operations, asset forfeiture and judicial security.

Meanwhile, the last time ZJ Wah Wa tweeted from his Twitter account was on May 3 and his last Facebook post was on May 1.

Thousands of fans and other people including delegates of the 11th Edition of the International Roots Homecoming Festival were Saturday night through Sunday morning entertained by five international music icons and a handful of rising Gambian artistes during a grand musical jamboree held at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.

The event, attended by scores of dignitaries including Cabinet ministers, guest speakers of the 2014 Roots Festival, and National Assembly members was a major highlight of the 11th edition.

Fans were first thrilled by Gambian artistes – Jali Madi, Jali Kebba, Manding Morry, and Humanity Stars and so on, who did justice to the programme. But when their international counterparts took to the stage, it was all but a different night entertainment.


Big Jamaican names, Miguel Orlando Collins, widely called Sizzla Kalongi and Mutabaruka, Scratchylus and daughter, Empress Reggae, and African-American female pop star, Yewande Austin, left their marks at the Independence Stadium when they put everyone on their feet till the early hours of Sunday morning.

Jamaican poet artist, Mutabaruka, performed with a call for justice for Africans and expressed how significant it is to reconnect with their roots. He narrated a touching poem to condemn the episode of slavery and called for African leaders to eradicate ‘injustice because it is fraud’.

Sizzla Kalongi, backed by his band and the last to perform, thrilled the crowd with an amazing show punctuated by his fanciful demonstrations.

Night of the Griots

Saturday’s show was preceded by a ‘Night of the Griots’ at the Ebunjang Theater, which kicked-off activities marking the 11th edition. It enabled the guests to be exposed to the history of The Gambia, its culture, tradition, norms and values.

The griots, oral historians and storytellers who have since time immemorial been playing prominent roles in the court of kings and queens in traditional society, narrated the birth – christening – known in Mandinka as ‘kunliyo,’ the initiation to manhood and rites of passage known in Jola as ‘futampaf’, engagement in Krio; marriage in Wollof known as ‘chate;’ death in Manjago referred to as ‘ouchorse.’ All these narrations were done through live stage performances.

The official opening of the 11th Edition of the International Roots Festival opened yesterday at the July 22nd Square in Banjul, presided over by the president of the Republic, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya Jammeh.
