The Hon. Olivia Grange, fondly called Babsy by many, celebrates her 77th birthday on Thursday as undoubtedly one of Jamaica's most recognisable, beloved, and longest-serving members of parliament.
Grange has been the Member of Parliament for St. Catherine Central since 1997 and is now synonymous with her post in the government as the minister of culture, gender, entertainment, and sport. Grange's roots in the Jamaican entertainment sector run deep, and prior to her work in politics, she was an event planner, promoter, and artiste manager. The minister worked with entertainers such as Shabba Ranks and Patra and was the first contracted manager for veteran Dancehall artiste Bounty Killer.
Grange was awarded the Jamaican Order of Distinction in 2015 for her contribution to the country's music industry, cultural development, and public service. The minister was later conferred with the Order of Jamaica in 2022 for her many sterling contributions.
As Minister Grange celebrates her 77th birthday, a special birthday message sung by former Jamaica Miss World Toni-Ann Singh was sent to the minister via her social media account. Singh further wished Grange a happy birthday in the comments section, writing,
"Love you Aunty Babsy!!! Happy Birthday."
