Upon hearing the heartbreaking news that Bob Marley had passed away on May 11, 1981, the world was shocked. At the time of his death, the singer was only 36 years old. According to his official death certificate, he died of skin cancer acral lentiginous melanoma that affected his brain and lungs.
After his last show in Pittsburgh in September 1980, the singer travelled between Miami, New York, and Germany to pursue alternative treatments following his cancer diagnosis. However, this proved to be gravely unsuccessful.
As the most recognisable face in reggae music, Bob Marley made an invaluable contribution to culture and politics through music, unlike no other Jamaican artiste before and after him.
To this day, many famous musiciansentertainers continue to honour and be inspired by Marley's music and positive vibrations, as his music is still played on many stages and continues to out-sell new faces of reggae music.
His deep poetic songwriting style made a global impact and earned the iconic reggae singer multiple awards throughout his lifetime.
The One Love singer also created an ever-lasting legacy with his 11 children during his short life. Several of the legendary singer children followed in their dad's footsteps by cementing their names in reggae music.
