Devano’s recent trip to the African continent saw him performing at the annual Club Mega Fest saw him being the youngest reggae artiste being invited to perform on the show alongside some of Africa’s top names as well as Jamaica’s Patra and Shaggy.
The Ghetto Splash show returns on December 16 at the Waterhouse Mini Stadium in Kingston. The event, which was held annually between 1989 and 2003, took an 10-year break before making a comeback last year.
According to promoter Patrick Roberts of Shocking Vibes Productions, last year’s show at the same venue was “a massive success” due to the appearance of top dancehall artistes.
“For the first time in their career we had Popcaan and Mavado on the same stage and this year we are pulling out all the stops to have another massive event,” said Roberts.
Roberts told the Jamaica Observer that he has partnered with Downsound Records and Boom Energy Drink for the show which benefits inner-city youth.
During its early years, Ghetto Splash was one of the most anticipated shows on the entertainment calendar. It showcased several acts on the Shocking Vibes roster including Beenie Man, Tonto Metro and Devonte and Snagga Puss.
Roberts said Spragga Benz, Morgan Heritage, Bounty Killer, Capleton, Sizzla, Konshens, Jah Bouks, Tarrus Riley, Busy Signal, Aidonia, Bugle, Popcaan, Ninja Man, Nature, Ishawna, Bling Dawg and the Downsound Crew are among the acts confirmed for this year’s show.
Patra was one of the most popular dancehall and reggae artiste in 1980s-early 1990s. She brust onto the scene with a string of collaborations with artists such as Mad Cobra, Shabba Ranks and Yo-YO.
She got her stage name from the shortened version of the word Cleopatra, and made her name as a talented deejay/singer/actress.
She debut as a guest spot on “Really Do It” with Mad Cobra and “Body Slam” with Richie Stevens. These tracks gave the world a taste of what the sexy and sophisticated Patra had to offer the US mainstream listeners.
After doing those collaborations she then decided to start her solo career, this led to the released of Queen of the Pack, Worker Man, and Romantic Call (feat. Yo Yo), all hit the top ten on music networks.

West Indies fast bowler André Russell has decided to dabble in music. According to the cricketer-artiste, he will be performing under the alias Dré Russ.
Dré Russ is currently working with dancehall producer Black Spyda and Barbados’ Peter Coppin, and has already released singles Sweetheart and Sweat Whine, which features dancehall icon Beenie Man.
According to Dré Russ in a release to THE STAR, he is taking his music just as seriously as his sport.
“The same way I put out my all on the field, is the same thing I will be doing to my music career because the sky is the limit. I can balance both careers, as sometimes when I am on tour, I have a lot of free time in between matches,” he said.
Black Spyda, who also dabbled with sports before concentrating on music production, says Russell has been doing music for many years.
“Me and André know each other from second form, and we played Minor Cup cricket league together for St Catherine, and from there, other leagues, then Jamaica Under 19. Many years went by, but I know he used to deejay from back then. I had stopped playing cricket and took up producing, and recently, he linked me and said he wanted to take his music serious. I made the connection with Beenie Man, and he loved one of Russell’s songs, and that’s how the collaboration came about,” Black Spyda said.
Spyda, who recently lost his father, said he gave music a break to mourn earlier this year. However, he is gradually making steps to re-establish himself as one of dancehall’s top producers.
“I lost my father this year, so 2014 was not all that good for me because I wasn’t doing much music. But right now, I have a lot of singles working on. I am also doing some work with Bounty Killer’s son that will be released soon,” he said.
Black Spyda is currently promoting the Sanguinary rhythm and part two of his Sunlight Party rhythm. The producer also has new singles in the works from RDX, I Octane, Aidonia, Demarco, Cobra, among others.

Bill Cosby may have nothing to say about the staggering amount of rape allegations against him, but one member of his family does and is speaking up about it.
“I believe he is innocent and unless the judicial system can prove otherwise, I stand behind him and his contributions,” said Braxton Cosby in an interview with Farrah Grey. Braxton also talked about the effects the allegations have had on the Cosby family. “Well, for me personally, it has allowed me to see some people in a different light. The Bible says that brothers are born on adversity and a friend loves at all times.
I’ve seen the true faces of a few friends around me and that is OK because it is necessary. But, at the same time, I’ve been given a lot of love and warm wishes by acquaintances over social media and they have really shown their appreciation to the contributions of my uncle.”
In more Cosby news, some U.S. universities and colleges have severed ties with the activist and comedian. According to Time, The University of Massachusetts Amherst, where Cosby received his masters and doctorate degrees, asked him to leave his post an honorary co-chairman of the school’s fundraising campaign.

Canadian Promoters Upset With Alkaline: Says That The Artiste Refused To Do What He Was Paid To Do
The promoters of a show where alkaline was set to make an appearance are now crying foul, Ricardo Henry of Rodeo Promo in Toronto Canada, says that after he had paid Alkaline in full the artiste refused to execute the job he was contracted to do. “it was a hosting party and was promoted as such. He was not expected to make a performance and was only paid to meet and greet with his fans, but he didn’t even do that, Alkaline came on stage, took the microphone, said big up Rodeo, the promoter and then made his exit”.
Said Henry According to Henry he was made to look like a fool, after Alkaline had refused to do what he was contracted to do. “I am a professional and I have dealt with a number of artiste who are stalwarts in the business who understand who they are and what is required of them”. He said that quite a number of his patrons who happen to meet the entertainer left the venue disappointed. “Imagine he is nowhere in the business as yet and this is how he treats his fans”. He said. When Alkaline management promotion team was contacted they gave another view on the story.
Damion Johnson the man, the man responsible for Alkaline Canadian tour said that his artiste did what he was paid to do and says that there are harsh feelings now because Alkaline did not give the promoters a performance. “He did exactly what he was paid for. It was not a performance show and everyone was clear on that,” he said. “All he was asked to do was to greet the fans and acknowledge their support and he did just that – the promoters just wanted more” said Damion.
