Spice: Macka smart for declining Lady Saw
Spice says Macka smart for declining Lady Saw [Video]
Dancehall artiste Spice has taken to Instagram to lash out at the annual Youth View Awards after her song, So Mi Like It, was snubbed at the show.
According to the sometimes controversial dancehall artiste, she deserved to win all her nominations.
“So you expect me to roll over and play dead? You expect after all the hard work I put in, I’m gonna sit back and let you act like I didn’t deserve what was due to me? Did you think that me of all persons would be quiet about how, biased this industry is?Well, let me tell you this if you didn’t want to hear it, So Mi Like It is one of the biggest dancehall songs last year. Not to mention the most viewed video out of Jamaica last year. So you are trying to tell me the people hated this song so much that no one voted for it?,” she directed to Youth View Awards official Instagram page.
logical and truthful
She continued her rant stating that fans of Jamaican music were disappointed.
“If you are going to keep such a beautiful ceremony, please make it logical and truthful because the people are not blind and dem a talk bout it. Yes, I won Female Artiste of the Year, thanks, but you didn’t have to award me for that title I knew it belonged to me hands down,” she said.
Spice also suggested that even her competitors knew that they were outshined in 2014. “Fair is fair … that song should have been awarded, this is not going to discourage me, my strength only pushes me to work harder suh mi can show unno up,” she said.
The deejay also pulled a Kanye West stunt advising her peers to stop collecting awards which they know they are not deserving off.
“Some a unno artiste fi stop collect people things too because mi know guilt a nyam out unno belly bottom,” she posted.
Spice was unavailable – for a follow up comment. However, reggae/dancehall artise Konshens posted on his Instagram earlier this year that he did not feel like he deserved some of his nominations. Popular selector Tony Matterhorn also posted a video to his Instagram page lashing out against the show.
Kanye West is perhaps one of the few recording artistes to have given away awards which he felt he did not deserve.
TOP-TIER dancehall deejay Spice said she intends to release her debut album later this year as the timing is “perfect”.
“I am at the highest peak in my career. My record company and I were in no hurry to put out a major project because we no want it flop. We see this year as fitting, so we are working on it,” she told the Jamaica Observer.
Spice, who, along with Chronixx, leads the Youth View Awards (YVA) with eight nominations, said her yet-to-named set will be distributed by VP Records.
In December, Spice (given name Grace Hamilton) released her five-track EP, So Me Like It. She said she is encouraged by how it was well received.
In addition to the title track, the listing includes Wine Ina Di Dance, Go Go, Like a Man, All the Way (ft Elephant Man) and Conjugal Visit (ft Vybz Kartel).
She said she was elated at the YVA nominations.
“Being nominated for eight awards means a lot. It doesn’t matter if I win or not, as just being recognised gives a fantastic feeling,” she said.
She got the nod in categories including Favourite Local Music Video, Hottest Summer Song, Fashion Icon — Female, Favourite Local Artiste of the Year, Young Hot & Hype Female of the Year, and twice in Favourite Musical Collab.
Spice said of all the nominations, she is, however, most elated about the category Favourite Dancehall Artiste.
“I am the only female in that category which means that I am standing up inside the industry that is male dominated. I have put in a lot of hard work and now I am reaping what I sew,” she said.
Spice’s hits include Jim Screechie, Fight Ova Man and Slim Versus Fluffy (a collaboration with Pamputae). However, her biggest single to date is Ramping Shop, a 2008 collab with Vybz Kartel.
While Spice assumed the public would like ‘So Mi Like It’, she had no idea that it would eventually bring her the level of success that it has in the past year.
“I didn’t expect it to be so huge, but from the moment I recorded it, I knew it was gonna be a hit. I remember saying ‘if da song ya nuh buss, mi ago give up on music’,” Spice said of the song that has more than 14 million views on her YouTube page.
She, however, stressed that the song did not become a hit overnight. Instead, she said quite a bit of street promotion went on after the release.
Not only has the song received views, it has also resulted in Spice getting numerous shows around the world.
“I am booked every week and I have two or three shows every weekend because of the song. I feel like I need a clone because, even when I am booked, people are requesting me,” she said, adding that she has been doing shows in Europe, South America and most of the Caribbean countries.
In a male dominated field, Spice said she is happy that she is able to headline shows on her own.
“The good thing is that it is Spice in concert. I am the only headliner. It feels good as a woman to know that over 2,000 people come to a club just to see you,” she told THE STAR.
Although she said this is her second most successful song, Spice still believes So Mi Like It has further to go.
“It is my second most successful song because Romping Shop hit the Billboard, and there is still room for this to hit the Billboard, based on the radio requests overseas,” she said.
Dancehall artiste Spice has responded to an alleged picture of her that has been circulating via social media.
The picture depicts a young woman wearing glasses, who bears a striking similarity to Spice, performing oral sex on a man.
In responding to the photoshopped picture, the So Me Like It deejay stated that “badmind is a hell of a ting”.
“Woke up, and they are sending around a ‘photoshopped’ picture claiming its me…I buss out a laugh when I saw it, because I was like, why would I be… with glasses on, though? … Well, unuh have nuff more pics fi make because me nah stop dis year, and mi a go harder, so unuh can start plan a suicide.
“The time you take trying to bring me down, you would use the time and put it in your own life. God have mi ting govern, so unuh can’t bring mi down. ‘Cause a weh God say, a nuh weh man say,” a statement from the deejay read.
This is the second time in recent weeks that a fake image of an artiste has made its way to social media. Earlier this year, Pamputtae denied reports that she, too, was involved in an explicit pic. It was later revealed that the picture was of a porn star.
