Killer Whale Kills Great White Shark in Newly Released Footage - Watch Video

Killer Whale Kills Great White Shark in Newly Released Footage - Watch Video

In footage believed to be the first of its kind, a lone orca, more popularly known as a killer whale, was recorded killing one of the most dangerous predators of the ocean, the great white shark.

Sharks are infamous for their brutality at sea, with countless movies depicting the animals as the terrors of the ocean. The killer whale, on the other hand, has a far less violent reputation among the populace, with movies like Free Willy depicting them as quite friendly.

However, the highly intelligent creature earned its name for a reason and is known to hunt large prey in groups. Despite that fact, a killer whale named Sophia was captured on camera hunting a great white shark alone.

The sixty-year-old whale, who is also a grandmother, can be seen on video charging towards the seemingly unsuspecting shark with great speed. As the great white shark appears to realise that there is a threat and begins to turn around, the killer whale seizes it in its jaws.

Professor of marine biology at California State University Long Beach, Dr Chris Lowe, told ABC News that killer whales are very powerful, and in some cases, possibly more powerful than a great white shark. Lowe added that the hunting of the great white may be an anomaly.

“I think what we’re seeing is probably an anomaly. I don’t think it happens that often. We often think of white sharks as being the top predator in the ocean when actually orca are,” Lowe stated.
