Amidst circulating photographs of 14-year-old Rasheem Wilson posing with seemingly an assault rifle, his grandmother has spoken to shut down all misconceptions.
Grandmother Michelle Dawkins has denied the speculation that her late grandson was involved in illicit activities. This speculation sparked after the pictures surfaced on the heels of the teen being shot and killed during what the police said was a shootout.
Dawkins, who has maintained her grandson's innocence since his death, has denied that the rifle Rasheem was photographed with was real. According to Dawkins, the rifle was a plastic gun that was used in a music video shoot that Rasheem was a part of.
Dawkins told the Jamaica Star, "It is him in the photographs but the gun is not real. It is a prop for a video shoot that he was in. It was a plastic gun and the video shoot take place about late December. Him was not a gunman so I want to just clear up that."
In a news report following the death of the Pembroke Hall High School student, a 9mm pistol with a magazine of 14.9mm rounds was recovered at the scene.
Along with clarifying the rumour, Dawkinson also expressed her anguish at losing her grandson while he was under her care. She explained that Rasheem, who was born in Ackee Walk near Red Hills Road, used to travel back and forth to spend time with his family before moving in with her a year ago.
She described her grandson as "quiet," saying that even his teachers could attest to that. There was a rumour stating that the 14-year-old was expelled from school, but Dawkins also refuted this allegation. She said that he fought once to defend himself against another student, but he was still attending classes.
"Him was a good little boy and him listen to mi," the distraught grandmother expressed.
