Jamaican Citizen Requests Kingston's U.S Embassy Remove LGBTQ Flag

Jamaican Citizen Requests Kingston's U.S Embassy Remove LGBTQ Flag

June 1 marked the beginning of an entire month dedicated to the LGBTQIA+ community worldwide, and colours of the rainbow along with various flags flown in support of lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, and other gender nonconforming individuals can be witnessed decorating the social media of their allies.

However, not everyone supports inclusivity and a citizen of Jamaica has taken the time to formally appeal to the United States embassy, located in Kingston Jamaica, to have the LGBTQ flag that was raised for pride month (as the LGBTQIA+ community refers to the month of June) be taken down.

In a letter addressed to the editor at the Jamaica Gleaner, an individual who seems to represent the Christian community stated, "I am appealing to the US Embassy in Kingston not to fly the LGBTQ flag."

It was stated that being in support of the LGBTQIA+ community and flying their flag disrespects "the law of God" and that the scriptures teach that the only acceptable union is that between a man and a woman. The address also mentioned that the purpose of this union was to promote "the reproduction of new human life and to train this new human life to be godly."

Citing "The Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms (Constitutional Amendment) Act, and the 2011 Offences Against The Person Act, Section 76", it was said that flying the LGBTQIA+ flag disrespects these acts and that, being allowed in Jamaica, the US embassy should thus respect the laws and the Jamaican people, and the laws of God.
