Jamaica Reggae Boyz Beats USA 2-1... On to Final

In a span of just five minutes in the first half, the US men’s national team unraveled, giving up two goals between the 31st minute and 36th minute. And those five minutes were enough to doom the US’ pursuit of its second consecutive Gold Cup title.

On Wednesday in Atlanta, the USMNT fell just shy of completing a two-goal comeback, losing 2-1 to Jamaica. Now, the US will play in the third-place game on Saturday, while Jamaica advances to the Gold Cup finals on Sunday.

Despite dominating the first 30 minutes of the Gold Cup semifinal game against Jamaica, the USMNT failed to score a goal to gain the advantage, and Jamaica made the US pay for that mistake.

In the 31st minute, Jamaica had a throw deep in the USMNT’s territory. The throw was a long one and entered the box. There, US centerback John Brooks failed to match Darren Mattocks leap and Mattock’s header beat US goalkeeper Brad Guzan, hit the far post, and then tricked along the line until it completely crossed over the goalline at the other end of the goal.

Jamaica’s game management in those last few minutes was just excellent. Cynical, maybe, but they stopped all the USA’s momentum. Congratulations to the Reggae Boyz.

Reggae Boyz in good form... Beats Cuba 3-0

Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz made it five wins in a row after cruising to an easy 3-0 win over Caribbean neighbours Cuba in a friendly international at the Montego Bay Sports Complex on Monday night.

After a tough 2-1 win over Venezuela on Friday at the same venue, the Reggae Boyz quickly opened up a 2-0 in the first four minutes with goals from Romeo Parkes and Daniel Gordon, before tDarren Mattocks made it 3-0 in the 30th minute.

Parkes powered home from a rebound past Cuba’s goalkeeper Alejandro Guerra then Gordon nodded home from close range and Mattocks also scored from a header.

Jamaica created a number of other chances, the best of which was a diving headers by Mattocks early in the second half.

Reggae Boyz beats Venezuela 2-1... Last night

Jamaicas Reggae Boyz came from behind to score a 2-1 win over Venezuela here inside the Montego Bay Sports Complex ‎earlier this evening.

Wing defender Gabriel Cichero gave the visitors the lead with a well taken goal on 13 minutes only for debutante Giles Barnes to pull the hosts level two minutes later.

Darren Mattocks then hit the winner on the hour mark after midfielder Je-Vaugh Watson had done great work to force an error in defence.

The win was only the second for Jamaica against the South Americans in six meetings, having suffered three losses.

Jamaica will now turn their attention to Monday next when they take on Caribbean neighbours Cuba in another international friendly as they prepare for the Copa America in Chile in June, as well as the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States in July.

Young Reggae Boyz faces uphill task to qualify for FIFA u20 World Cup

Jamaica’s young Reggae Boyz are facing a must win scenario in their final two games of the group stages of the CONCACAF Championships if they are to harbour any hopes of advancing to the FIFA Under 20 World Cup in New Zealand.

The Jamaicans saw their hopes of finishing among the top three teams in Group A receiving a blow after going down to a 2-0 defeat to Panama at the National Stadium in Kingston on Wednesday – a result that left the tournament host second from bottom on the 6 team table with just a point from 3 games.

In a tightly-contested encounter that produced no first-half goals, Panama took the lead in the 56th minute through the dangerous Edson Samms and went further ahead 4 minutes from time courtesy of an Ismael Diaz strike.

An ordinary exchange of passes in the defensive side saw Fidel Escobar burst into action and deliver a superb pass with the outside of his right foot down the middle of the field. Out on the left, the intelligent Samms got behind defender Roberto Johnson and raced towards the ball. He got to the edge of the penalty area and snapped a shot past goalkeeper Nicholas Nelson for a 1-0 lead.

Only two minutes earlier, Jamaica had an effort from a similar spot on the other end but Donja Smith sailed an attempt high as goalkeeper Jaime De Gracia charged off his line.

Diaz netted an insurance tally with four minutes left in normal time. After an exchange with the right-sided Jhamal Rodriguez, Diaz received a return pass and fired the ball into the lower left corner from 17-yards out.

Assistant coach Lenny Hyde while acknowledging the uphill nature of Jamaica’s task says a lack of discipline at key moments caused his team the game and also said the aim was now to get a result against the United States on Sunday

The Panamanians with the result moved to maximum 9 points from 3 games, 2 points ahead of Guatemala who had a 2-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago. The Trinidadians with the loss remain on 4 points but dropped to 4th on goal difference behind the United States who ran out comfortable 8-0 winners over Aruba.

Group A next moves to Montego Bay and will resume play on Sunday with a tripleheader: Panama-Trinidad & Tobago (3:00 p.m.), Guatemala-Aruba (5:30 p.m.) and Jamaica-USA (8:00 p.m.).

The tournament continues on Thursday afternoon with El Salvador facing Canada at 3:00 p.m. after which two times defending champions Mexico (9 points) take on second place Honduras (4 points) at 5:30pm. Action on the day ends with the bottom of the table clash between Haiti and Cuba at 8:00 p.m.

Day 7 – Thursday, January 15

Reggae Boyz vs Martinique in the 2014 Carib Cup today

Jamaica reggae boyz will go into action this evening in a battle of former cham-pions when they take on Marti-nique in the feature match of a Group B double-header at the Montego Bay Sports Complex in the 2014 Caribbean Cup.

The opening game will see another former winner, 2007 champions Haiti, taking aim at the rapidly improving Antigua & Barbuda.

Jamaica’s under-pressure coach, Winfried Schäfer, needs a win in order to stave off calls for his sacking, and starting with victory this afternoon is paramount for the coach.

“We need to win,” he said.

Schäfer, whose tenure as the Reggae Boyz head coach has come in for scrutiny as a result of a series of poor results, told The Gleaner that the team has been training well and is ready to take on Martinique.

slight favourites

“A couple of our players came in late, including midfielder Rudolph Austin and the other England-based players, but they have settled in already and are with the team in training,” Schäfer said.

The Reggae Boyz no doubt will start as slight favourites, but they know well that only a victory will appease local supporters.

Schäfer thinks the team strength is in attack, where they boast the likes of Vancouver Whitecaps’ Darren Mattocks, Craig Foster (Reno FC), Deshorn Brown (Colorado Rapids) and Michael Seaton (DC United).

“Our strength is in the forward line. We have some good quality all round, but I think that it is where we are strongest because they all are skilful also,” said Schäfer.

“We cannot afford to lose the first match; that would be disastrous, so we are going to be positive and play good football. Hopefully, we take the three points,” Schäfer added.

The last time these two countries met in the Caribbean Cup, it ended in a 0-0 draw, but that was back in 2012. Since then, the Boyz have seen their luck fluctuate and more recently have slumped in the FIFA Coca-Cola word rankings, plummeting to 113th.

Martinique’s head coach, Louis Marie’ann, believes his squad can get the job done, admitting that he is cautiously optimistic of his team’s chances against the hosts.

“It is very important not to start on the wrong foot,” he said. “A number of our players were born in France and we brought them in to augment our local-based players.

“The downside to this is that we have not played a competitive match with this mix before, so going up against Jamaica will be an important test of our readiness,” said Marie’ann, who predicts a 2-2 draw.

“We are expecting a good game and I hope at least that if we do not win, we draw,” reasoned Marie’ann.

Martinique have appeared in 12 Caribbean Cups, winning their first and only title in 1993. In that tournament, which, ironically, was staged in Jamaica, Martinique defeated the hosts 6-5 on penalties in the final at the National Stadium.

Age: 23

Position played: Forward

Club: Colorado Rapids FC

School: STETHS

Prediction against Martinique: 2-0 win for Jamaica

Personal target: Four goals or more.

Reggae Boyz forward and former high-school standout, Deshorn Brown has laid down some personal markers for this year’s Caribbean Football Union Caribbean Cup in Montego Bay.

Brown has had a good season for his club team, Colorado Rapids FC of Major League Soccer and is now ready to light up Montego Bay with goals for the Reggae Boyz.

“I think it will be a successful championship for us, both on and off the field. We need a win in our first match, and that is what as a team we are going about doing,” Brown said.

“We want to take it all from training and the experience we have and package it just right for this tournament,” he added.

Name: Hughan Gray

Age: 27

Position: Right wing back

Club: Waterhouse FC

School: Denbigh High

Prediction against Martinique: 3-0 win for Jamaica.

Personal target: Stop the opponents’ forwards going forward.

Hughan Gray is the first player from Denbigh High School in Clarendon to play for the national senior team.

The powerfully built wing back is seeking to make the position his own and has looked the part primarily for his club, team Waterhouse FC, in the local Red Stripe Premier League.

His aspirations are inexplicably linked to the success of this current Reggae Boyz squad.

“Once we put in the right amount of work, I think we will win and I am sure the other players are of the same mindset,” Gray said.

“It’s a tight squad; we want to play for each other and succeed together, and in training, it’s a good feel .”

Fuller may play for JA again in Carib Cup... after 2 yrs out

Long-discarded Reggae Boyz striker Ricardo Fuller could be in contention for a spot in the Caribbean Cup squad, as coach Winfred Schäfer continues to weight his options ahead the tournament next month.

The forward signed for new club Millwall in the summer transfer window, but has struggled for form after injury set-backs. Fuller, however, gave glimpses of what he offers to the club at the top of his game when he came off the bench to scoring two goals in 10 minutes against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the championship last weekend.

Millwall manager Ian Holloway revealed that he has been in dialogue with Schäfer about the possibility of the player making an appearance for the national team.

brilliant goals

“Jamaica might want to call him up soon and I’ve had a chat with their national team manager about that,” Holloway told UK publication Southwark News.

“I think they saw him come off the bench and score those two brilliant goals against Wolves the other week, and now he’s in their thoughts again.”

Holloway, however, had concerns about the length of the journey to the Caribbean and the impact it could have on the 34-year-old.

“All that flying might not be good for him and I think Ric himself knows that. He is not ready to fly over there just to come off the bench and play 20 minutes,” Holloway said.

Fuller, who has scored nine goals in 73 appearances for the national team, has not suited up for Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz for two years, earning his last cap against Panama in June of 2012.
