As 2023 comes to a close, Shenseea has plenty to celebrate, with the Jamaican singjay named the most streamed female dancehall artiste on Spotify and earning a spot on her second movie soundtrack of the year.
Shenseea surprised fans earlier this year when she announced that she was featured on the soundtrack for the animated movie Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, appearing on the single Infamous (Spider-Verse remix) alongside Myke Towers on the deluxe version of the soundtrack.
This time, the Blessed Singer combines forces with American actress and singer Fantasia Barrino for the soundtrack of The Colour Purple musical film. The Colour Purple musical is the latest reimagining of the original novel, following the release of the first movie adaptation in 1985.
The movie documents the abusive life and marriage of Celie and is set for release on December 25. Ahead of the movie's debut, the official soundtrack, The Color Purple (Music From and Inspired By), was recently released, with Shenseea and Fantasia, who will be staring in the film as Celie, appearing on the single Hell No! (Missy Elliott Remix). Shenseea shared the news via her Instagram on Friday.
The track samples Jamaican artiste Dawn Penn's hit song You Don't Love Me (No, No, No) and, like the movie, chronicles the struggles of women in a male-dominated era while motivating them to find their courage. Shenseea appears in the third verse of the single with her signature vocals.
“Feel like I been on this road forever, but I still fight. Tunnel vision focused on the light shinin' real bright. Always find my way through the darkness, this is personal. I am my sister's keeper, that's something for certain. I'll be damned if a man teach me how to be a woman,” Shenseea sings.

With this new release, Shenseea continues to infuse different genres into her music and grow her international audience. The Good Comfort singer's growing fanbase is evident in her streaming numbers, with Spotify sharing data on Friday, revealing Shenseea as the top streamed female dancehall artist.
Shenseea is the fourth most-streamed dancehall artiste overall, securing spots above Stefflon Don, Koffee, and Spice. Shenseea currently has over 4.1 million monthly listeners on the platform.
