The modern demand around England is to take the positives, so here goes. Roy Hodgson’s team ended their World Cup campaign with a goalless draw against the world champions.
Not world champions that you or I might recognise as such, of course. Not world champions as crowned by FIFA, at a World Cup.
But if we took every international football match played since the game’s inception, with England the first world champions, earning the crown by beating Scotland, and awarded that title to the victors each time the champions were defeated, then Italy were world champions as of Friday. They then lost to Costa Rica.
