Neymar out of World Cup [Video]

Brazilian star Neymar has been ruled out of the rest of the World Cup due to injury, dealing a major blow to the host country in their bid to take this year’s trophy.

The striker was taken off in a stretcher late in Friday’s quarter final match after taking a knee to the back from Colombia defender Juan Zuniga.

The Brazilian team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar said Neymar had fractured a vertebra in his back adding that he would not have to have surgery, but would now need “a few weeks” to recover.

David Luiz fired home an unstoppable free-kick to send Brazil through to the World Cup semi-finals in an enthralling tie against Colombia on Friday night.

Fellow centre back Thiago Silva had given Brazil the lead after just seven minutes, bundling the ball home at the back post.

For a brief flicker it looked as if Mexico would astonishingly top Group A as they tore Croatia apart, but they eventually had to settle with mere qualification and a last-16 tie with Holland after beating Niko Kovac’s side at a canter.

Three second half goals were enough to sweep the Europeans aside – despite a late Ivan Perisic consolation – as they progress out of a group that looked altogether trickier than they made it seem.

Rafael Marquez sent a bullet header beyond Stipe Pletikosa to open the scoring before Andres Guardado added a second just three minutes later.

Javier Hernandez, who changed the game off the bench, added a third as they sought more goals to top the group. But a late Fernandinho strike in Brazil’s game against Cameroon meant Mexico would have to settle for a runners-up spot.

Mexico have only conceded one goal in this tournament thus far and will fancy their chances against Louis van Gaal’s trailblazers.

Louis van Gaal’s Holland topped Group B after Leroy Fer and Memphis Depay came from the bench to see off Chile.

Norwich City midfielder Fer scored within two minutes of his introduction when heading home from a free-kick and Depay turned in Arjen Robben’s cross late on.

They should now avoid the probability of a second-round tie with hosts Brazil.
