Bolt to run at Diamond League meet, July 4th

Jamaican Track and field megastar Usain Bolt will line-up in the 100m at the Diamond League meeting in Paris on July 4.

Organizers say they managed to lure Bolt to run only his third ever 100m on the Stade de France track, his first since 2010, after liasing with other meet directors.

Bolt is the 100m world record holder, winner of the 100m gold medals at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games and has won world titles at this event in 2009 and 2013.

He holds the Paris 100m meeting record with 9.79, which he clocked in 2009. It completes some unfinished business for the Jamaican.

Valentine’s Day, February 14, is expected to be even more bedazzling, when six-time Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt makes his eagerly anticipated 2015 debut at the Camperdown Classic, at the National Stadium.

The legendary Jamaican sprinter called a premature end to his season last August, when to the dismay of millions of adoring fans, he withdrew from the Weltklasse Zurich 100m race in Switzerland.

All members of Bolt’s famed Racers Track Club are billed for the event, barring injuries or unavoidable engagements.

“All Racers athletes who are in the island, and who are fit and well, will be running,” said event chairperson, Cynthia Cooke, at yesterday’s press launch, at the Spanish Court Hotel.

“There is a buzz, everybody looks forward to Camperdown Classic because that is where the big stars open their season,” she continued.

Now in its 11th renewal, the organisers are promising an organised, world-class, and intriguing event, and hoping it can aptly commemorate Camperdown’s 85th anniversary.

Registration and warm-up will take place at Stadium east field, while long jumps and some 1500m events will happen there also.

A first-place prize of $60, 000 will go to class-one boys and girls, second will get $25,000, and third $15,000.

Camperdown students will pay $100 to enter, while co-ed school teams will pay $7, 5000, single sex teams $5,000 and individuals $500, respectively.

Track and field fans at next month’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, will be delighted with news that Jamaican sprinting star Usain Bolt has made himself available to compete at the July 23 – August 3 event.


Bolt, who has enjoyed a stranglehold on international sprinting since taking three gold medals in world record times at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, advised, through his website, that he has informed the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) of his availability.

The thing though is that the 27-year-old, if selected, will only compete in the 4x100m relay.

Injury earlier

Bolt has been working to regain fitness and form after his build-up was disturbed by injury earlier this year, forcing the double Olympic champion to withdraw from races in Ostrava and Paris as well as the ongoing JAAA/Supreme Ventures National Senior Championships, which this year is being used to help select Jamaica’s athletics team to the Commonwealth Games.

“I am not ready to compete at the Jamaican Championships this weekend, but I have informed the JAAA’s that I am available for selection for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and have submitted the relevant documentation,” Bolt said.

The National Senior Championships is considered mandatory for athletes hoping to represent Jamaica at senior international competition, but under the JAAA selection criteria, injured athletes are allowed to skip the championships and maintain consideration once a medical exemption is granted.

FANS REQUEST

Bolt, however underlined that he does not want to take the place of someone who earned it at this weekend’s trials, but that he hopes to at least feature in a relay after receiving overwhelming support and requests from his fans in the United Kingdom.

“I do not wish to take the place of anyone who qualifies this weekend in an individual event, but I am available for relay duty if the selectors feel I can be an asset to the Jamaican team in Glasgow,” Bolt added. “I have received lots of requests, invitations and messages of support from my fans in Scotland who are looking forward to a great event.”

Bolt has never competed at the Commonwealth Games but has repeatedly stated that he hoped to feature in Glasgow and add a Commonwealth Games medal to his six Olympic and 10 World Championships medals.
