On the morning of December 16, armed members of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan entered the Army Public School in Peshawar, the largest city in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The men moved from classroom to classroom, telling the schoolchildren to say their prayers before shooting them at point-blank range. According to the military, the massacre left 141 people dead, including 132 children.

VICE News traveled to Peshawar to meet with survivors, paramedics, and relatives of victims of the attack, and to learn how the region is coming to terms with the massacre.

Army infantry reconnaissance squad in Nurah Lam, Laghman Province, assaulting a Taliban compound.The video shows an RPG that the Taliban threw down as they retreated from their positions, as they closed within 25 meters.

For all the armchair generals here, this team reacted a lot better than most I’ve seen. At least this wasn’t a standard “take contact, suppress, and retreat” situation. They took contact, identified the enemy location, pushed forward, and forced the Taliban out of their positions so quickly that they had to leave supplies and weapons behind.

VICE News travels to the province of Herat to see the aftereffects of the election that took place June 14. Although polling went fairly smoothly in Kabul, voters elsewhere in the country were repeatedly targeted by the Taliban; as many as 50 Afghans were killed. Others had their fingers, still black with telltale ink after voting, cut off by Taliban fighters. VICE News visited the hospital in Herat to speak with several victims being treated there. Fearing further harm, some of them agreed to speak with us only if they covered their faces and hid their identity.
