Mr. Vegas Gives Malie Donn Advice Plus Talks About the Pros and Cons of Dancehall Artistes Signing a Major Deal

As a veteran dancehall artiste in the business, Mr. Vegas gave a dancehall lecture to fellow upcoming artistes educating them on the effects of signing to major record labels, and also gave fast-rising entertainer Malie Donn some advice on his missed record deal for his 'V6' hit single.

The 'Heads High' entertainer cautioned artistes to not sign prematurely to a major record label, claiming that 90-95% of the time they fail. This he said is because some of the producers are not knowledgeable of the music and, therefore, lack the knowledge needed to take an artiste's hit song to another level.

According to Vegas, major record labels hunt for new artistes believed to have the potential to make it on the big scene and then try to sign them before their career catapults. By doing this, they spend the bare minimum in signing and will have maximum control over their recording rights.

"So when yuh run to sign to a major you have to be very careful because now you are not free," Vegas said.

Mr. Vegas then commented on an article where Malie Donn disclosed that he was offered several major record deals but could not sign due to not having ownership rights. He stated that he agreed with Ireland Boss, the producer of the V6 single when he turned down the offer, as he believes that major record labels do not know how to manage dancehall entertainers.

He mentioned that labels oftentimes try to change an artiste's unique sound and used Shenseea, Jada Kingdom, and Samantha J as examples.

Offering words of advice to the fast-rising dancehall deejay, Vegas told him to continue recording songs and to ensure that he has support in his music. He also told Malie Donn to ensure that when he records singles in the future, he has rights to ownership.

"My yute gwaan focus pan recording a bag a song, yuh si Malie Donn. Go and record a bag a chune, no mek no juggling miss yuh. No mek no bad rhythm miss yuh and when u getting signed to a label, mek sure u have someone in your corner weh can get things done," Vegas said.
