A special prosecutor has reportedly been appointed to investigate a juror accused of breaking the law during the trial that ended in reggae superstar Buju Banton’s gun and drug conviction on in the US.
Writing yesterday in the Miami NewTimes, Chris Sweeney, said the special prosecutor who was appointed “from outside the US Department of Justice plans to meet with Banton’s legal team, the former juror Terri Wright, and federal agents.
“The appointment of a special prosecutor in such a situation is significant. Such prosecutors are typically reserved for investigating government officials” added Sweeney.
Wright has been accused of conducting improper research during the 2011 re-trial.Banton’s legal team has contended that her action was a breach of court rules and on that basis Banton should be granted a re-trial.
She was quoted in a newspaper report as saying that she researched areas of the case. However, Wright had dismissed the allegation saying that the newspaper reporter misunderstood what she said.In 2013, a judge issued an order that experts could search the ex-juror’s computer hard drive for 21 key words.Since the discovery, the entertainer has been unsuccessful in getting courts to order new trials.
Last month, the US appeals court dismissed his latest application.
Hope for Buju Banton
