DOWNSOUND GOES FARR OUT TO CLOSE 2015
Popular music production and artiste management label, Downsound Records, has put the cap on a successful 2015 with a powerhouse video for the immensely successful riddim juggling project, the Farr Out Riddim.
The Medley video, released a few weeks ago, showcases four singles on the Farr Out riddim project that was officially released in the Fall of 2015, and represents the only juggling project released from the label during that year.
“We have done many singles throughout the year both in house and with many outside producers. But with The Farr Out instrumental we just felt that this beat clicked for a year end effort and so we hit it. And we did it within a week or so including the video. At times things just click and we at DSR are clicking!!!” Label CEO Josef Bogdanovich shared
The Medley Video, directed by Mr. B for Downsound Records, features two artistes signed to the Downsound label imprint; Harry Toddler ‘Use To’ and Ishawna ‘Long Fingernail’ and two artistes highly rated by the label; Chi Ching Ching ‘Weh Dat Aguh’ and Vybz Kartel ‘How Mi Grow’ . The riddim itself was specifically limited to these artistes to allow the singles the proper attention especially when it relates to radio play.
Already the Farr Out’ riddim itself has received great support on local airwaves and is gaining traction on international platforms. It is projected to reach far in the international dancehall music space, predicted by even the naming of the project itself (Farr Out). Downsound Records will continue to promote the project in 2016 as well as looking at new possibilities.
“We are constantly being offered beats and sometimes one of them grabs us and we do something with it. I think in 2016 you are going to see some new concepts from our artistes which should be interesting no matter if in a medley or single form.” Josef Bogdanovich added
The label is also looking at continuing work on exciting material with Ishawna and specifically targeting the international market for Downsound recording artiste Nature who will be performing next on the Trendsetting Reggae Showcase ‘Rebel Salute’ 2016.

Bill Cosby charged with sexual assault
Bill Cosby, who has for decades been pursued by allegations of sexual misconduct, was charged with sexual assault in Pennsylvania on Wednesday in a case that many people, including women who had come forward publicly, long thought prosecutors would never bring.
The criminal charges stem from a woman’s accusation that he drugged and sexually abused her at his home in a suburb north of Philadelphia in 2004.
Kevin Steele, the Montgomery County district attorney-elect, said that Mr. Cosby faces felony charges of indecent assault. He said the investigation involved a “relationship” between Mr. Cosby and the woman, Andrea Constand, that came about from her work with the basketball team at Temple University, Mr. Cosby’s alma mater.
“The evidence is strong and sufficient to proceed,” said Mr. Steele, now first assistant district attorney. “A person in that state cannot give consent,” he added.
The criminal charges followed a year of tumult in Mr. Cosby’s career as dozens of women accused him of sexually assaulting them. Many of those women cheered the decision to prosecute Mr. Cosby, the entertainer who was once revered as a father figure and popular moralist.
Lawyers for Mr. Cosby, 78, who has long denied the many accusations and had never before been criminally charged, had only recently spoken of how he had been harmed as universities and Disney World retracted honors they had bestowed on him.
The lawyers said they would fight the charges.
“Make no mistake, we intend to mount a vigorous defense against this unjustified charge and we expect that Mr. Cosby will be exonerated by a court of law,” Monique Pressley, one of his lawyers, said in a statement.
Document: 2015 Criminal Complaint Against Bill Cosby
Mr. Steele said the decade-old case had been reopened after new evidence emerged in July. He referred to court documents and the deposition from a civil suit filed by Ms. Constand in which Mr. Cosby acknowledged he had given women quaaludes as a party drug in his efforts to have sex. Some court records were sealed when the civil case was settled in 2006 but were released by a federal judge in July.
In the criminal complaint filed Wednesday, investigators said one of the most important factors to them was Mr. Cosby’s “conflicting identifications of the drug” he gave Ms. Constand. She said he described the drugs as herbal, and Mr. Cosby told the police the drug was Benadryl but told Ms. Constand’s mother he could not recall what it was.
Mr. Cosby’s apologies to Ms. Constand and her mother and offer of financial assistance was “further indicative of Cosby’s consciousness of guilt,” according to the complaint.
“Investigators recognize that individuals who are falsely accused of sexual assault generally do not unilaterally offer generous financial assistance, and apologies, to their accuser and their accuser’s family,” the complaint says.
A predecessor at the district attorney’s office, Bruce Castor, declined to prosecute Mr. Cosby in the case in 2005, saying he did not believe there was sufficient evidence. That decision was an issue in the fall race for Montgomery County district attorney, between Mr. Castor and Mr. Steele.

Did StarFace lyrics caused Sting 2015 to end early
It is the intention of every performer to leave a lasting impression on his/her fans with every performance, and while up-and-coming dancehall artiste Star Face achieved such a feat at Sting 2015, the manner in which she did this is not one that she intends to celebrate.
Wearing an outfit that left little to the imagination, Star Face had just begun to deliver some rather explicit lyrics to patrons at Jamworld in Portmore, when the police decided to pull the plug on the event. However, instead of taking aim at the police, the enforcers of the sometimes bothersome Noise Abatement Act, several patrons left the venue spewing some rather harsh words at the young artiste, who was performing at Sting for the first time.
“I just want to clear the air because people are blaming me saying I ended Sting. You cannot blame me for that because that was behind my control. The authorities are the ones to be blamed. As it relates to the songs I was performing, the content did not have nothing to do with the show being turned off because Sting is a big people show for 18 years and older,” she said.
Sting’s publicist, Keona Williams, also refuted claims that Star Face had anything to do with the police’s decision to end the show prematurely.
Still, Star Face is adamant that the police, who turned off the show, had an ulterior motive.
“Sting is a show weh keep way over deh so pass the sea weh nobody nuh live, and it’s not like I was singing beside kids home and stuff like that. Trust me, something else behind it, maybe a because mi a young artiste.
People before me were doing explicit songs too, so how dem fi a sey a Star Face mash up Mr Laing show?” she questioned, seemingly bothered by the rumours.
In explaining that she was billed to perform earlier on the show, Star Face also had some harsh words for our lawmen and the Jamaican Government.
“Dem need fi give dancehall a break now still. Yu have people who do different types of music, so leave dancehall alone and stop lock off the people dem party man,” said Star Face, who paid tribute to former dancehall artiste Lady Saw by doing If Him Lef.
With Sting now behind her, the artiste who was recently signed to overseas-based record label, Konsequence Music, told THE STAR that her Sting experience will now be used as a stepping stone.
“Everything happen for a reason, so mi thank Father God because a whole heap a artiste perform and nobody nah talk bout dem, so am gonna use this for positive movements,” Star Face said.

Young Generation Fraternity (YGF) Records’ launch of the Chronicles of Success project in late December sums up what has been generally a good year for the Ocho Rios, St Ann based label.

Kendrick Lamar Describes the First Murder he ever saw
Kendrick Lamar is capping off 2015 with an interview that reflects on his youth in Compton and his struggle in coping with fame and success off the back of a platinum debut album, and more recently, 11 Grammy nominations. The rapper sat down with NPR and delivered insight on all these fronts.
Topics of gang violence and murder are often tackled within Kendrick’s music, especially what he witnessed growing up in Compton. During the brief interview with NPR, Kendrick explains witnessing his first murder and how it affected him.
“It was outside my apartment unit,” Kendrick says. “A guy was out there, serving narcotics, and somebody rolled up with a shotgun and blew his chest out. We kids play in this apartment unit, riding our bikes or what not, so admittedly it done something to me right then and there, to let me know this is not only something I’m looking at but it’s something maybe I have to get used to, you dig what I’m saying?”
When asked “how close” he was to becoming entangled into gang life, Kendrick replies, “How close, I was on the edge, fast, in a hurry. You grow up inside these neighborhoods in these communities, and you have friends, friends that you love, friends that you grew up with since elementary and you have their trust and their loyalty. So it brings influence. So no matter how much of a leader I thought it was, I was always under the influence, period. Most of the time when they’re involved in these acts of destruction, I was right there.”
He goes on to discuss To Pimp A Butterfly, in particular, the spoke-word refrain where he appears to be talking to himself (“I remember you was conflicted, misusing your influence…”), and which ultimately leads to Kendrick screaming in his hotel room one night. He describes where the feeling was coming from with NPR.
“What was the feeling? The feeling was missing home,” Lamar says. “The feeling was, I should be with my family right now when they’re going through hardships, with the loss of my dear friends that’s constantly passing while I’m out on this road. The feeling was, ‘How am I influencing so many people on this stage rather than influencing the ones that I have back home?’ That’s the feeling: being inside the hotel room, and these thoughts I’m just pondering back and forth while I look at the ceiling all night.”
Finally, Kendrick speaks about a line from “The Blacker the Berry” that stirred some controversy in relation tot he Black Lives Matter movement. Kendrick raps, “So why did I weep when Trayvon Martin was in the street, when gang-banging make me kill a n**** blacker than me? Hypocrite!”
He explains, “It’s not me pointing at my community; it’s me pointing at myself. I don’t talk about these things if I haven’t lived them, and I’ve hurt people in my life. It’s something I still have to think about when I sleep at night.
“The message I’m sending to myself — I can’t change the world until I change myself first,” he adds. “For instance, when Chad was killed, I can’t disregard the emotion of me relapsing and feeling the same anger that I felt when I was 16, 17 — when I wanted the next family to hurt, because you made my family hurt. Them emotions were still running in me, thinking about him being slain like that. Whether I’m a rap star or not, if I still feel like that, then I’m part of the problem rather than the solution.”

Stylysh defends Sting
Dancehall diva Stylysh defends Sting, accuses other deejays of “conspiracy to kill the show”
Although the public and dancehall insiders have been lambasting the organisers of Sting, at least one artiste, Stylysh, has come out in robust defence of the year end show.
Sting 2015 has been widely regarded as a flop, with a lukewarm lineup that failed to attract a large audience. Police pulled the plug on the show just after 6am, bringing the event to a premature end.
“It is true that there were organisational problems at Sting, just like with any other major show, but at the end of the day, Sting plays a major role in our dancehall community. Over the years, every upcoming artiste wanted to come on Sting, but now that those same artistes are established, they don’t want to support the show that gave them their first start and that is selfish,” Stylysh reasoned.
She pointed to what she said is a “conspiracy to kill the show”.
“The popular artistes just want to do international shows, they don’t want to do local shows, yes, you make more money a foreign but we have to remember where we are coming from, Sting is one of those shows that highlight artistes at this time of the year, so why try to kill a part of our culture?” she asked.
She made an impassioned plea for artistes not to allow an integral part of dancehall culture to die.
“It cannot benefit the industry to kill Sting. Who is going to benefit the most if Sting dead? They don’t care about the continuity of the industry, if Sting dies; another major platform to buss artistes also dies. Artistes must ask why perform for free for other organisers but stick up Sting when they have no major sponsors, it is almost like they are deliberately trying to kill this event, and that is wrong!” she argued.

Ashanti booked for Shaggy and Friends 2016... See full Line-Up
AMERICAN pop singer Ashanti is the latest international act added to the line-up for Shaggy and Friends concert set for the lawns of Jamaica House on Saturday, January 2.
“Right now, things are really falling into place. But you know how Jamaicans are: they are gonna wait for the last minute to actually purchase the tickets, but what you have is a lot of corporate companies buying the tickets as Christmas gifts for staff and we really appreciate that. We have the line-up of artist ready but, you know, we always have a few surprises, so patrons can look out for that,” show conceputaliser Shaggy told the Jamaica Observer.
Ashanti joins hip hop act Nelly, girl group En Vogue, international chart-topping Jamaican act OMI, American-based duo R City, and the main headliners. They will be joined by Inner Circle, Bugle, Ding Dong, Beenie Man, Ghost, Terror Fabulous, Nadine Sutherland, and gospel artiste Kevin Downswell.
Shaggy explained that one of the challenges this year is working with the two new sponsors Fiat and iHeartMedia.
“These company’s are accustomed to putting on events like this for themselves. They have no interest in Jamaica and, therefore, the challenge was really getting them on board. What has been good is that they have just rolled with the ball and told us to do what we do,” Shaggy explained. He said further that promotional activities are taking place on 150 radio stations across the United States under the deal with iHeartMedia, which is reaching an audience of 125 million persons. On the night following the live show, a condensed version of the show will be broadcast across the US, courtesy of iHeartMedia.
The diamond-selling artist said his team is fine-tuning a parking plan. Other new initiatives include pledge tents at the venue, where patrons can donate directly to the cause, as well a ‘scratch and win’ promotion organized by telecommunications company Digicel.
Started in 2009, Shaggy and Friends concert has raised more than US$ 1.6 million for the Bustamante Hospital for Children.

Artistes Up-set over not performing at Sting 2015
Several dancehall artists who did not get to perform on Sting 2015 due to its premature end are casting the blame at the promoters feet.
Sting 2015 came to an abrupt end at minutes after 6 AM on Sunday after police officers stormed the stage. No definitive reasons were given for the closure but sources are telling us that cops cited security reasons.
Some of the disgruntled artists who did not get to perform on Sting includes Tanto Blacks, Vershon, Beenie Man, Ninja Man, Gully Bop, Devin Di Dakta, Quick Cook, Merciless and more.
Reps for two of the artists says that the promoters lack of organization is to be blamed for the flop show.
“The show could have been better if proper planning and organization was put in place,” a rep told Urban Islandz.
Several patrons complained bitterly on social media with some saying that they want a refund.
Isiah Laing could not be reached for a comment.

Nicki Minaj engaged, Seems To Be Making Wedding Plans
It hasn’t been 100 percent confirmed that Meek Mill and Nicki Minaj are engaged, but Nicki certainly has marriage on her mind. She just asked her Twitter followers to choose between a beach wedding and a church wedding, and it would be strange if she was asking out of pure curiosity.
Thus far, the beach wedding has gained more RT’s than the church wedding has fav’s, so if she’s indeed intent on letting her fans decide the site of her wedding, it looks like her and Meek are headed somewhere tropical.
Then again, there aren’t any beaches in Philly, where Meek is currently confined as he’s waiting to see if the judge sends him back to jail for violating his probation by leaving his hometown without proper permission.
Earlier this month, Nicki shared two pictures of a huge ring Meek had gifted her, which she placed on her ring finger. If that wasn’t, in fact, a signifier of a marriage proposal, then there isn’t much room left on that finger for another ring.
Meek is set to receive his official sentence in February. Hopefully the judge’s ruling doesn’t interfere with any potential wedding plans.

Sting 2015 a success... says Promoters
Sting 2015 stood strong with stellar performances from veteran reggae and dancehall recording artistes. Half Pint was phenomenal on stage with timeless anthems such as: “ Greetings,” “Level The Vibes,” “Mr. Landlord” and “Hold On.” The incident free event also witnessed a memorable show from the Bandelero, Pinchers, Tiger, Lady G, Terror Fabulous, and Courtney Melody. The seasoned acts were united with prolific tune-for-tune segments that rocked the crowd.
By midnight the hash tag #Sting2015 was a trending topic on Twitter and Instagram internationally. The organizers of the event, Supreme promotions continue to revel in the success of staging one of the longest running festivals in the world. Sting 2015 being a globally recognized brand included Reggae and dancehall representative from other nations that celebrate the genre, Japan (Ackee n Slatfish), South Africa (Black Dillinger), United Kingdom (Don Andre, Spookie, Flex PD) and Austria (Miss Str8 + Jami Dread) among others.
Notable performances came from rising contemporary act, Jahmiel, Professor Nuts, Turbulence, General B, Frisco Kid, Silva Cat, Junior Demus, Maestro Don Mr Lexx, Tabeta Cshae and Raine Seville among many others. Endorsed by Lady Saw to be one of the next leaders of dancehall is Starface, who was the final act to perform at Sting 2015, based on time constraints and the police being furious with the use of profanity.
According to CEO, Isaiah Laing, “Sting2015 from then till now was a hundred percent incident free and I am grateful for that. Majority of the veteran acts billed for the event performed. We would have loved more time; unfortunately the police decided to end the show prematurely. Over the past thirty-one years, they have always granted us additional time and have been cooperative. We made every effort to encourage an early turn out, especially with the gate prizes of free motorbikes being given away every hour. We will work closer with the artists and their managers to control their time and language on stage, to ensure everyone gets their turn to perform.
He continued to say, “We can now say that the end time for the show will not exceed 6:30AM. We must respect the law, therefore the patrons, performers and us the promoters, will have to make the adjustment to presenting earlier that we can enjoy everything before 6:30 in the morning.”
